Knowing that Abby is so knowledgable about OTHER topics, it's sad to once again read the comments of a well-known figure (remember Barbara Walters' comments last year about adoption. . . ) who is speaking about adoption without sufficient research and/or open mindedness. Very disappointing. A deluge of letters in response might turn a few lights on. susan

I'm just amazed that someone would send such a question to Dear Abby. There is a whole lot going on that can't possibly be addressed in a reply in a newspaper. I don't even want to go into my thoughts on the reply.
As an adoptive parent, I believe it is my responsibility to act as an adoption advocate. If anything about my situation is difficult, I would turn to friends who have adopted, rather than a woman who likely knows nothing about adoption. I don't think I would ever pose the question in a forum that might serve to perpetuate the public's misconceptions about open adoption. I can only imagine that we will come across an individual who will now ask us about our contact with Isabella's birthmother and will tell us all about this 'Dear Abby' story. Brooke |

I thought that was kind of strange too. You'd think one would go to a source that could provide more detailed information. Let's hope they aren't basing their decision in this matter solely on Dear Abby's response. The dark poetry, definitely the bmom needs to keep to herself right now. What I got from reading the column though was that it was the phone calls too that were upsetting the girl. If every contact she has with her bmom leaves her upset, then the parents have every right to be concerned, and they have every right to tell the bmom to keep her dark poetry and feelings of regret to herself because it upsets the child they all love. |
