OT - checking car seats on a plane
I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find (or if such a thing exists) a bag especially made for a car-seat. We do enough traveling and would like to be able to check the car seat with the regular luggage. I thought something other than a trash bag - or the plastic bags the airlines use, would be nice.
Is there such a thing?? If so where can I get one?? Thanks in Advance, Martha |

I've seen them at Babies R Us for about $25.

Yes they definitely make them. They have them at Babies R Us for sure as we bought one there about a month ago.

Do NOT waste your money. We fly frequently. I have yet to fly on an airline that did not give us a bag to put the carseat in. Just ask when you are checking in. It looks like a huge, clear plastic garbage bag.

we bought one at babiesRus and ended up returning it for rips at the seam. we had used it once
. very cheaply made. I'd ask the airlines in advance if they have one, or you can take the soft cover off the seat and pack that separately if you're worried about dirt.where ya going? just being nosy .

We got a pretty durable bag at One Step Ahead.

I am so happy to see this thread I was just trying to figure it out for a trip dd and I will be taking in July. She will be 11 mo old so the infant seat will be a thing of the past. I was also wondering do you install the seats in a taxi? or what about the subway or bus? I guess this is what comes from living in a city where we never take public transportation. What has been your experience. I am tempted to ask the inlaws to go buy a cheap used carseat to keep there. i don't know I guess it is just another step for us to learn about.

In Taxi's, yes, we install the car seat with just the regular shoulder belt. Quote:
Nope, nothing to install them to, since there's no seat belts. If it's an infant seat, the ones with the handle that you can carry baby in, you can just carry it, or set it down on a seat beside you. If it's an older child seat, just carry the seat with you and have the child sit on the seat. You don't want them strapped into something you can't carry / control if the bus lurches or stops suddenly. Quote:
We travel a lot too and always just get the airline to give us a great big plastic bag that we throw away at the other end. We even do this now with Liam's toddler/ booster seat.

Our parents both keep car seats at their homes for when we travel. With my daughter we never used a carseat on airplanes. Now that we have two (both non walkers) we just bought a carseat that converts into a stroller. I love the thing as a stroller. It works as a carseat but I would not want it as my primary carseat because the seat belt has to go right over the front of it to hold it in (sort of like a booster seat). Still I am glad we got it because it is one less thing to worry about while flying.

Order one online @ Walmart and have it shipped to their house. Or ask the inlaws to go pick one up for you...I see them for less than $40 all the time ![]()

We brought our car seat on the plane with DD when she was small (up to age 2), and installed it in an airline seat. Thereafter, we used the plastic bag provided by the airline and never had a problem - no damage or loss. We visited grandparents and they didn't have to buy a car seat, although they had the pack n play and portable high chair seat.

I've been to New York City a couple of times with my son, and I just held him on my lap in the taxi. We didn't have the car seat with us since we took the train in to the City from where we live in NJ. I don't know about other cities, but I can't imagine that a NYC cab driver would wait for you to install a car seat for a short drive. If you were coming into the city from the airport I would definitely use the carseat, though. |

One Step Ahead
For those who recommended the One Step Ahead site - I looked there and couldn't find it
I'll keep looking - I was really hoping for something with a strap to make toting it around a little easier than just a plastic bag KWIM? Thanks, Martha |

Thanks Everyone!!!!! Great advice. I did not know about getting a used carseat. I am so glad I asked. When we go to my parents it is no problem b/c I have 5 older neices and we will just use their old stuff. but when we have to fly to DC to visit dh parents that is another story. I think I will use the airline bag and bring it. It can't hurt to have it available. You never know when they might want to go sightseeing. I would be a wreck to carry dd on my lap in a NYC taxi (this really shows the midwesterner in me) They scared me half to death when I visited years ago. I think it would just do me in now.
Lots to think about. |
