Thanks you guys!
Cate, thanks for your post; you are a high fever veteran, like I am. It was very informative for someone who has not experienced but might in the future. It can be pretty daunting at first, but I guess like anything, when you know how it is and know how to address it appropriately it becomes sorta old hat. Luckily dd's seizure was shortly before she turned two, so she was a bit older. Very very scary for an 11 month old. DD is like your babe, rising very rapidly, out of the blue actually and really no other symptoms. That night she had had Motrin; it had not been near three hours, because if I can sleep during her illness at all, I set the alarm to get up. I know that an alternate dose has to be given. I awakened like a bolt of lightening and she was whimpering, burning up at 106 and a diaper only on. I absolutely believe that the brain shuts off the temperature. We knew exactly what to do and one called paramedics while the other did it. She had the seizure while waiting for them to come. Tylenol works quickly and by the time they arrived it has gone down to 105 something. I have been present with literally dozens of clients when they had grand mal seizures; that was not out of the ordinary for me, but a whole nother deal when it is your child. I had never heard of the alcohol thing at all, but we only opted for bath once and instead do tepid rags. B saw the Dr. You guessed it; she said some kids always run really high fever. Did a WBC which is not back yet to rule out bacterial infection. Otherwise, it may be really early rotavirus, no diarrhea yet and no vomiting; according to ped it is going around with a fury. Babe seems to be feeling better and will eat bananas but no toast or applesauce. Mom, you are funny! The odor is distinct alright, kinda like sulphur, synonamous with rotten eggs, or as a Texan might describe it, 3 day old Armadillo roadkill bakin in the hot Texas sun. Everytime I think of the word rotavirus, I think of Elizabeth's (Shoshana's) post and poor Xio's bout with it.

Red, I was hoping that B was better. DS is still sick with spiking fevers today, too. Called the ped again and have been alternating between the Tylenol and Motrin. No other symptoms but the fever. And on his bday. Poor babe. Thanks for the sympathy!

My son has only spiked a high fever once. And it wasn't that high - 103.5. It's high enough for me. Doc said alternate Tylonol w/ Motrin and take his clothes off.
I made the mistake of trying the bath thing. Nearly sent the poor babe into shock. I'll NEVER EVER do that again! However, I spike a high fever often. When I get sick - cold/flu, anything - I spike up to about 103 for a couple of hours, and then, it's over. It's happened since I was a babe - many, many years ago. Did I say many years ago? It used to freak my mom out. It still does when I tell her. It was so bad that getting my period would give me a fever, among other horrific symptoms. I actually ran out of Motrin for my son and he hit a fever just recently. I'm a single mom, I was calling everyone to run to the pharmacy for me. So, I went to BJ and bought the 3 pk so that I won't run out for a long time. |

Renee, How is A? I hope feeling much better and on the mend.
B is still sick but seems to be improving. My poor girl on the other hand started vomiting this morning and has had four long episodes of it (first two times in the car.) I feel terrible for her. This is the first time she has ever been sick with abdominal issues and first time she has vomited. Luckily, no fever yet. She has had three baths today, drank pedialyte and is now sleeping. Big rant: Our house is on the market. I have been amenable to having it shown anytime from morning to evening as long as I am given 15 minutes notice to get babes packed up and us leave. Today I check my cell phone. A realtor had left a message only 20 minutes prior that he was showing my house shortly. I called him back and said that I was sorry that would not be possible, as I have two sick babes. He yelled, "why are you just now calling me?" I was pissed and stated, "maybe because both of my kids have been in the bath, and I have been cleaning up vomit" then I hung up. It is rare that I let stuff like that bother me. He had some nerve.

Oh no Red!!! I was so hoping to hear that everyone was all better! I am sorry that DD is sick now..poor babies and poor Mommy!!!
A's fever FINALLY broke today. He is still not himself and not eating and that is so unusual for him as A is not shy to a fork, lol. This has certainly been a long couple of days and now DH is leaving on Mon for a business trip...ugh! AND we are set for a snow storm! Fun fun fun, huh? I think the realtor is ridiculous. I am glad you answered him the way you did! Are you moving far from where you are now?? Good luck on the sale. I will be thinking about you and I hope the kiddos are all better soon. --Renee |

please send thoughts and prayers to my girl. Spent much of today in urgent care. She has a viral infection, no vomiting now but has been 101 to 105 all day - that is getting Tylenol or Motrin every 3-4 hours. Giving her pedialyte with a syringe.

Oh Red! The poor baby. It's got to be really tough on her, you mentioned before she's never been sick. The poor thing. Viruses suck! You can't even give her anything to hurry it along. Try the Pedialyte freezer pops. It might help with the fever too. If she'll try it. Poor baby, probably doesn't want to try anything at this point.
Keep her hydrated and comfortable. Make plans for a 'date night' out with the hubby for next weekend. You'll need it when she's all better. |

The nerve of your realtor! I don't blame you for hanging up on them!

Crina, Thanks for asking. I am doing good. Babe is hanging in there; high fevers continue accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea today. We saw our awesome ped this morning. Luckily we are able to keep babe hydrated with 5 ml syringe of liquid. She is catching up on her 2 years of no sleeping, and I am just holding her a lot. Thank goodness B has not gotten worse or gotten it again. He is eating a bit and on the mend.
My mom is flying in from Vegas tomorrow to help out. Yeah!

Wanted to add that in all of her lethargy, dd opened one eye today and asked for affirmation that it was "Monday, skating with the stars." I cracked up. Her obsession with ice skating and dancing, professional and perfected (or not) rivals her obsession with the human body.
