Double Stroller Advice

I thought I saw a message string recently about all the different double strolles to accomodate an infant and a toddler, but I can't seem to find it. There's a VERY VERY good chance we'll be needing one next week.

DD's baby sister is 5wks old. Birthmom is planning to relinquish her parental rights Wednesday morning and wants us to adopt her. Since I already have 99.8% of what we need, I don't have much to fill the time. I was thinking about trading in my two strollers for one double. Any advice?

Good luck,
Until recently, we were using a Gracco double stroller four two girls. I was stuck between that one and a jeep double stroller. But the Gracco allows you to attach a car seat to either seat and was easier to push. The gracco is also pretty easy to steer and fold up.

I suggest going to the store and checking out the different models.

We have a peg perego double stroller, that sits front to back love it! We also have a combi that sits side to side and can except the newborn carseat! The combi is very light weight, folds up easy! The peg is bigger weights more but is better than the gracos I would say! God Bless you and your new to be family member. You also might want to look into joining a stroller group and exchanging your stroller with someone whom is done with one you want

God Bless,
Summer

Thanks for the input. I wasn't sure how easy or hard the side by side is, but I am glad to hear you can put the infant car seat it in. I thought it was just for sitting. I was going to go to the local once upon a child for a swap. If there is a local group, I'll check into that. Great idea.

Is the Graco easy to steer?

Thanks all: We are filled with anticipation, but stll cautious until Wednesday comes and goes.

no personal experience but here's what I saw at xmas time when I watched moms (saw no dads-not sure what that means) with double strollers:

the double wide (side by side): never fit in most of the shopping areas. fits down the main aisle of the store, but very hard to get between racks.

the long stroller (back to front): very long, hard to turn on a dime. picture a semi trailer that's a double, or those long american cars pre 1978.

there are good points to both styles, but from what i've seen, the parents that were the best able to get around had one in the baby bjorn and one in a stroller or mom and dad each had a kid in the stroller (so you might not want to get rid of the ones you have until you're sure).

good luck!

Lisa

Wanted to jump in here since I feel like we've tried just about everything! We have a side by side Graco double stroller. We chose the SBS over the front to back because both seats could recline if they fall asleep during an outing. Some FTB's had recliners but it made them even longer and harder to steer than usual. It is the width of a typical wheelchair and supposed to be able to fit anywhere that is wheelchair accessible. Not many places truly are! (Sometimes when I go into places that are really bad I often make a comment to the owner or salesperson that they are not ADA compliant.) Because you have to stick to the main aisles I don't typically drag it out unless I think the girls might take a nap or the store doesn't have a cart. I've also tried stroller connectors (that connect two umbrella strollers) and found them too frustrating and complicated for everyday use. I've heard that the really expensive ($600-800) doubles are more compact, lighter and steer better....but I could never justify that amount, I'm too thrifty.

When they were younger (or with an older child/infant) it really is easier to just stroll one and carry (bjorn, sling, wrap) one. Less stuff to mess with and you can get in and out quicker. Most of the time....if the store doesn't have a cart it has to wait to the weekend when I have reinforcements to help

I purchased a double stroller for an infant and 3 year old. I am a SHM and have to do a lot during the day. To be honest, I have used it once in 5 months. We bought another single stroller because the double is just to hard to manage. Difficult to steer, had to get around a store, hard to close, bulky, etc.
I like using a single stroller for the older child and a sling for the baby.
Good luck with what ever you choose.

I honestly had few complaints about my gracco front to back double stroller. The front doesn't recline all the way but our older one doesn't like to sleep when there is action about so it wasn't an issue.

It is long but once you get used to it, pretty easy to steer.

We don't use it right now because our big girl likes walking. But when I did, it was used almost daily for things like doc visits, errands, street fairs last summer, trips to the mall, etc.

Combi Twin Savy

I have the Combi Twin Savy and I LOVE it! It is a side by side that is the size of a standard wheelchair, so it fits through doorways fine. I needed a stroller that was easy to steer (this one can turn on a dime), is light weight (it actually weighs less than my single stroller) and is easy to put into the trunk. It folds up very compactly and you can even steer it around while it is folded up! We had everything we needed for #2 as well, so it was the only real investment we needed to make. And it was an investment, but it has paid for itself a thousand times over. I still use it on a daily basis and we’re up to #4 and #5 now!! I had no problem getting used to the fact that you cannot put a car seat in it (some of the new models can accommodate a Combi carseat, tho’). Good luck with your shopping!!! J

This is has been a huge help!! I get a little impulsive and would have bought the first thing I saw, just to feel like I was doing something. I think I will wait, and determine if we "need" one. The advice of hold one, push one sounds very practical. We carried DD almost exclusively and rarely used even the single stroller. Now she is big enough for the umbrella one. Thank you all. I bought a second crib last night on E-Bay that I am picking up Wednesday. I shure hope the next several days pass without incident.. Wednesday morning, Wednesday morning..
