Unhappy RSV anyone??

Well, our first emergency room experience has passed. 4 mo old DD has RSV - coughing like crazy, stuffy nose, hard time eating - the whole shebang. Dr on Sunday recommended emergency room - and after waiting to be seen for 3 hours - we were finally diagnosed!!! Admitted and stayed overnight (although we got to our room 8 hours after arriving at the hospital). DD is doing much better now - thanks to nebulizer (fun for a 4 month old) and our love, I am sure!! The hospital Peds ward was full of RSV babies..... She is in daycare and probably picked it up there.... Keeping her out until next week now....

Anyone else out there going through their first (and hopefully only) RSV experience?? To be honest, I had skimmed it in the "what to expect book" and thought "I don't need to know that - she'll never get that!" Oh well!!

RSV stinks!!

Us too

Addy is 14 months and had RSV pneumonia last week. It was horrible. We didn't have to go to the hospital but she was MISERABLE!!! Plus she had double ear infections. I have never seen so much snot in my life. We're finally over the worst of it now but it's a week I'll never forget. I'm glad your sweet baby is better and back home.

This is high RSV season. I remember when I was at the hospital with my dd the ward was filled with RSV kids. The doctor advised us to just keep her home for a month if we could until the worst of this passed. I did and she never got it. When we adopted our little boy he was almost to the point of needing to be hospitalized with this but luckily he responded to the neb treatment at the doctors office so we just had to treat him ourselves for a week every 2-3 hours. He was about 6 months old at the time. It's a scary time for the parents and tough one on the kids. Hope your little one is feeling better soon.

Many healthy wishes for your kids!

My son had RSV when he was an infant. One thing the doctors seem to forget to warn you - don't allow any pregnant women near your child while s/he has RSV. It is extremely dangerous for the baby. If you've been in contact with any pregnant women in the week or so before symptoms developed in your child, please give them a call and encourage them to be seen by their doctor ASAP.

I hope the little ones feel better soon! And I hope the parents are able to get through this with as little worry as possible!

hmmm, i have never heard of this, and i swear, this time of year, i do all day teaching on rsv. webmd has a great couple of pages on rsv:

http://www.webmd.com/hw/raising_a_family/aa22693.asp

even if a pregnant woman has been exposed to this common virus, there likely isn't anything that can be done to prevent infection. heck, getting synergis (rsv immunizations) for kids takes alot of insurance convincing (ie, baby was premie, heart condition, etc).

as the op said, rsv stinks!! the babes are miserable with it, and the amount of snot....holysmokes. i remember having it a few years ago, and as an adult, i choked the whole time....and all i could think of was these poor babies!

Hmmm

I hadn't heard of the pregnancy/RSV risk either, could it have been confused with CMV - that can be dnagerous during pregnancy. Just a thought.

I think it might have more to do with the drugs they use to treat RSV than with the RSV itself - like the ribavirin.

I know that when my son had it, the hospital he ended up being admitted to was in a rush to contact the hospital he'd been initially treated at because his nurse there was pregnant. They were on the phone for several hours trying to track her or her doctor down. Then again, that was over 10 years ago.

My daughter is the Queen of RSV. Unfortunately, she had pneumonia 3 times before she was tested for RSV (on the 4th round of pneumonia and a different Dr.) . She ended up hsopitalized in isolation for 9 days at 8 months old. And just the week before New Year's, we were back again for 5 days, same scenario. Her Dr. fought hard for her to get the vaccine, but she was denied. The vaccine is very expensive, and most insurance companies don't want to pay for it - yet 2 years in a row they have ended up paying for hospital stays (can someone please tell me where the logic is in that?)
Not a lot of people hear about it (though more as of late) unless they have preemies. And yes, the amount of mucous is UNREAL!
NOT FUN!
Hope all the babies get better!

My younger son just had RSV (bronchiolitis) over Christmas. He was not quite 3 months old, and it was miserable. He sounded awful with phlegm and coughing. He used the nebulizer 4 times per day. It took about 10 days to get better. Fortunately, he was well enough after about a week to travel 400 miles to my parents for Christmas.

My older son had bronchiolitis when he was 6 months old and still uses a nebulizer whenever he gets a cold because it always turns into bronchitis (he's 2 1/2 now).

My heart and thoughts go out to you whose little ones are sick with this right now. YUCK!

My son contracted RSV last winter. He had come home to me at 15 months, and we made a 'quick' trip to Chicago the next month so he could meet his extended family. He got sick the day after we arrived and ended up being hospitalized for 6 days and on oxygen the entire time. Talk about 'welcome to motherhood'!

The way RSV was explained to me is that all children will contract it before they are 2. For most, it will just be like a bad cold. Some have severe enough symptoms to require medical attention and hospitalization.

My son now has tendancies towards asthma. Anytime he gets a cold, we need to start doing the inhaler (with mask) to avoid another hospital stay. Sometimes, we even need to resort to steroids to calm the linings of his lungs. Poor thing.

Take care of your little ones and take care of yourselves, too. Henry gave it to me and I can tell you that there is truly nothing worse than taking care of a sick child when you are sick yourself (double YUCK). Hang in there y'all.

Smile much better

Thanks for all the warm well wishes!! DD is doing much better - Nebulizer is really helping. Came home yesterday evening to no heat in the house, the ignitor went on the furnace..... Kudos to the wonderful repairman who understood that I had a sick baby in the house and got it repaired right away on a Friday night. That guy just won my services whenever I need him!! How nice!! (Thank goodness for fluke warm NJ January weather too!!)

I had not heard of the RSV / preg woman connection, but we did hang out with family and another 5 month old and 2 month old the day before the emergency room visit. They were our very first calls upon diagnosis!! All is well with them though - no RSV to speak of!!

Like I said, RSV stinks!! But the support we have gotten has been AWESOME!!!
