Adoption Books
I'm looking for books that I can read to my adopted child.
I saw on another thread that someone suggested "The chosen one" but no author was listed. I'm planning to buy "A mother for Choco" - I've heard it's a cute story. Anybody else have suggestions??? ![]()

Hi,
How old is your adopted child? I read the family book by Todd Parr (I believe) quite a bit to my kiddos when we first took them in as foster. It's great because it just mentions adoption along with all other types of families, and gives you a great chance to talk about it with the kids. We have since adopted our 3, and they are now 1, 3, and 6. I wrote a chapter book called my new life about our kids and self published it. My 6 year old loves it and I'm working on book two. It's kinda like her story through her eyes and in her words. Here's the website [EDITED] I hope you can copy and paste that, lol, it's long. But I recommend mine for kiddos around the ages of 5-10. And my kids went through both foster and adoption, so book one is more on the transition period into our home and family. I have heard of a few more, havn't bought them yet. Havn't come across any in barnes and noble or any other store around here (and I have looked) other than the family book that the kids and I have really enjoyed, but I know from here at the forums there are quite a few parents of adopted children who have written and published books on it. Let me know if you find others that you like! I am always looking! :-) Carrie

I don't have any books to recommend, but when we took our adoption classes, we were given a magazine from Tapestry Books. it has some GREAT books listed. They do have a website where you can order books.
Good luck! ~jess

Also check out Tapestry Books (google it). They have a ton of books on adoption - for children, for parents, for families, etc.

I love Tapestry and have gotten a lot of books from there. One that my son really enjoys is The Little Green Goose. I am sorry I do not remember the author, but I believe I got it from Tapestry. We also have a A Mother for Choco and Tell Me Again About the Night I was Born.

My new book is available through adoptionshop. It is entitled WHO AM I?
It is a great resource to use when explaining adoption to your child. My book deals with identity issues that many adoptees must work through. Good luck.

Definitely check out Target and Tapestry books. It's good to go on Amazon, too, as they will have pages from the book for you to read before you spend the money on them (or get them through a inter-library loan at your local library). For me, some sounded great, but when I actually read them, they weren't right for our situation or maybe just weren't to my liking. Overstock.com also has a lot of books and great prices.
We have "The Tummy Mummy" (hate the title) but the book is very simple and beautiful pictures. (From the "Adoption Means Love" series - you can google it) Also, "Little Miss Spider", the first story about being born and trying to find her mother (not to ruin the "plot", but she finds a beetle taking care of her). Not necessarily adoption-related, but appropriate. Has one of my favorite lines... "For finding your mother,/ There's one certain test./ You must look for the creature/ Who loves you the best."
