an adoptee....

i was just curious after seeing this "home study" phrase...is this the natural order of adoption or just a case by case? i'm wondering if my adoptive parents went through this process too. i was adopted in '76 and have little info on my own story. any insight would be greatly appreciated.

no idea how it was done then...it is certainly standard to have a homestudy done now...I'd assume it was the same back then, but you can never assume in adoption.

I'm sure others have wisdom to offer.

Hi Lostdawn,
I am sure that so much has changed in the adoption world since you were born. In todays adoption world though, you must obtain a homestudy whether you are doing a domestic, international, or foster adoption. This is the case I should say in America. Best wishes to you.

I was adopted in 1959..there was a home study done at that time. I was adopted through the state and the study was pretty intense. They spoke with neighbors, my dads work ect.

My DH was adopted in the early 60's. I am not sure if the information gathered back then was as detailed as it is today. The wait times were much shorter back then too.

I was born in 1971, and my parents told me that they went through a homestudy that sounded as "strict" in its requirements as the one DH and I went through when we adopted our kiddo. They spoke of the SW visiting their home several times and the whole thing.....

HTH!

I was adopted in 1973, my parents contacted an agency to adopt and were put thru a process to determine if they were qualified (I assume some type of homestudy) and were told they didn't qualify to adopt thru that agency.

They contacted an adoption attorney once my bmom decided to place with them (who they knew before she was pregnant) and did not have to go thru the same process as they did with the agency.

So, at least in my case, my adoptive parents did not have to go thru a homestudy (or any type of investigation) to adopt me.

Also, a homestudy is an evaluation of the pre-adoptive home and it wouldn’t really give you any insight into your story, as most homestudies (if they are done) are usually done prior to the child arriving on the scene.

My mom worker as an adoption Social Worker in the late '60's/ early '70's and not only were homestudies required they were even more intrusive than they are now. Not only that a woker had much more leaway in not approving people. I know many really good people who were turned down because the criteria was so ridiculous. One family I know was simply too old at 32 and 34 .

Smile thanks so much

this gives me a new vein which to question my afamily. I seem to recall rumor of this sort of thing through my neighbor's family as I grew up. Thank you for your insight and info on the situation.
