Hello,
We recently discovered that one of the potential birth moms who contacted us was actually a scam. I just wanted to caution others. There are so many wonderful, caring potential birth moms out there, but there are also some who are not for real. Many times it is difficult to tell the difference.

Please remember to never send gifts, clothing, money or gift cards to any potential birth mom directly. These things should always go through a licensed adoption agency or attorney and ONLY after an adoption professional has actually met the birth mom and verified she is who she says. Also keep in mind that documents such as "proof of pregnancy" can be faked, as can medical records.

It is sad that there are women out there pretending to be pregnant to either get money from or emotionally torment potential adoptive parents. In our case, we knew better than to give this woman anything, since she wasn't working with an adoption professional. I have heard of others, however, who have lost money to fraudulent birth moms.

The right birth mom and child are out there. Please don't let your strong desire to be a parent cloud your judgment.

Oh, Dee.... having been there, I can only say that I am sorry that this has happened to you too. I am glad that you figured it out so soon.

I wanted to add that there are also scammers out there who are in it to solely play with peoples emotions. The scammer that we dealt with did not want anything, other than to talk to us at least 5 times a day on the phone and also via email and IM.... why, I couldn't tell you. I can't handle talking to me for that long, lol!!!

We haven't heard from the other potential birth mom since Friday. Last we heard she had spoken to our agency and was meeting with one of the social workers early this week. She still seemed very interested in meeting with us soon too, so hopefully we'll hear something in the next couple of days.
