Need Your Thoughts
We have been identified as an adoptive family for a little girl who is currently 22 months old and in the State Foster Care System. We will see her for the first time on Saturday. She has been in states custody from birth as birthmom was in prison. Birthdad's rights have been terminated by court order (as far as we know he is not around) and birthmom voluntarily relinquished her rights. It is our understanding that birthmom will remain in the correctional facility until December of 2006. It is our belief that once birthmom is released from prison that she will return to the city that we currently live in. Our delimma is this -- this little girl's first name is very unique and based on the birthmother's past and the reasons that she is currently incarcerated, we wonder if we should think about changing her name. The SRS worker has explained what adoption means to the birthmom but when I spoke to her today she said that she also explained to birthmom that Kansas does not recognize open adoptions and, therefore, she would not be receiving any type of identifying information as to the adoptive family.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. |

For almost the same reasons we changed our 15 month old asons name. We added a new first name and kept his first and second birth names as middle names. I know there is alot of opinions out here on name changes, but to protect my child or our family, I would change the name if you think it's necessary to protect. Do what YOU feel is right for YOUR daughter.

It sounds like it might be a good idea to change her name. You could keep her first name as a middle as well. Don't forget to request a new social security number as well.
