Curious about true stats, not myths
Now I am sure you have ALL heard this since you adopted, "Ya know, I know someone who got preg. right after they adopted", or "They say blank percent of people get preg. after adopting". So, let's find out what the truth is! How many of you ACTUALLY did get pregnant after adopting? My guess not as many as everyone keeps bugging me about.

It didn't happen with us.
Okay, should I now say, I had a hysterctomy at 25, due to complications from our first pregnancy? I guess that's one of those small details I should probably say. LOL. But, if we're counting for statistics, it didn't happen. starting the count... no pregnancy after adoption--- 1 pregnancy after adoption---0 Mom2J

I did get pregnant after scheduling the Homestudy and took a pg test the morning the SW was coming to our home. We lost the baby though, does that count?

Count me in! After 10 miscarriages and two adoptions, I finally had my "not supposed to happen" baby.
How's your baby doing Tracey? |

Don't know if this counts but I got pregnant when the check was in the envelope and all the paperwork filled out and the homestudy scheduled (twins, lost them at 14 weeks).

I have not gotten pg(would be a miracle, I am going through menopause at 35) but, I post at two other adoption boards and two ladies that adopted within two weeks of me both are now 5 months pg. The hilarious thing is, all of our babies are almost 6 months old. I guess the pressure really was off!!

We're doing great! Thanks for asking. Still nursing. She much rather nurse than the bottle. And she loves co-sleeping.

A family that lived on my street had completed the adoption process and was about to pick up their new baby when she found out she had already been pregnant. They tried to conceive 10 years prior to the adoption.
The kiddos went right through school togehter. ![]()

Not me! And I don't think anything will ever happen without more medical interventions and a whole heck of a lot of luck. Just to add - I've read two articles about this topic and they say that between 5-10% of people who adopt go on to get pregnant. I met someone recently who this happened to and she actually felt guilty about "feeding into the myth".

actively tried not to get pregnant til age 39.5. tried from age 39.5-42, though dh and I were living 400 miles apart (funny but sperm doesn't seem to be able to travel 400 miles so you can imagine that we were unsuccessful-and yeah, it's his slow, reluctant sperm unwilling to travel that was the problem:-). does that count? LOL Oh and we haven't used any birth control since 39.5 nor have we actively tried for the past two years. The best birth control is a newborn baby

My birthdaughter's adoptive parents are currently expecting a child the same month as my Husband and I are expecting our child. (Interesting family unit there.

We found out we were pregnant the week we got home from finalizing our adoption -- but we already had a bio son and knew we were fertile. It wasnt an "adoption miracle" it was "we forgot to use bc miracle
"The most amazing story I know of is friends of my inlaws. Please keep in mind that the "kids" in this are now in their mid to late 30s so times have changed. This couple was unable to conceive and applied to an agency to adopt twin girls. They were contact about twin boys and accepted the placement (newborns). 4 months later, they were contacted by the same agency asking them if they wanted to "trade" because twin girls had become available (newborns). Obviously, they said no but asked to adopt the girls as well. Because they were fairly wealthy and could afford help, the agency agreed. Now amom was feeling REALLY run down with 4 little babies so she finally went to the doctor. She was pregnant NATURALLY with triplets. No drugs. No nothing. They had to fight to keep the twins as the adoptions werent finalized, but did win. My husband's brother went to school with all 7 kids. Who were all within 10 months of each other. Jen PS I do think that why these stories stick out is that they are the exception. I would bet the percentage is less than 3%. Especially if you took out the "fertile" couples who chose to adopt.

If I recall correctly, the actual percentage of infertile couples that become pregnant after adopting is 10%.
Amazingly enough, the percentage of infertile couples that later become pregnant without adopting or using fertility treatments is.... 10% Peggy |

Didon't happen with us but it did happen with one of my best friends. She and her dh had gone through about 5 IVFs and then decided to adopt. Their wait was about 2 years, and they didn't use any bc during that time. She got pregnant right around the day they picked up their ason. Their bio son was born prematurely when their ason was 8 months old.
