Question Average wait experienced for biracial baby?

I know this can vary greatly, but I would like to hear from parents who adopted biracial (CC/AA) newborn. How long did you wait from initial application to baby home. I am just trying to figure some kind of average. Agency says average adoption 6-14 months with biracial being closer to 6 months. Does this sound about average? Thanks

This doesn't really apply to your situation, but I had to add my .02...Lol. Our son is hispanic/CC. We were matched two months after submitting our paperwork and he was born one month after that. Hope it helps but as you said it really varys depending on the individual situation.

We are a biracial coule so our wait might have been shorter than other families.

#1 we applied in February, homestudy completed in July first call in August (didn't work out) THE call in Oct. (same baby but now available)

#2 We applied in April, Homestudy approved in Sept. and Rachel placed in Feb. We had a couple of calls before but we held out for a girl.

#3 Began looking at independent adoption in Sept. Found match on internet the same week. Officially matched after Christmas baby born in June.

#4 Got a call out of the blue about twins due anytime. We dithered about adopting again and finally decided to go for it a week later. The birth parents decided to parent. We begin actively looking the first week in April. Lead came up laste week in April but no info. End of May we hear about that lead and i't's a go. baby due in late July. Baby came 6 weeks early in mid June.

So the total process took 7 months, 10 months, 9 months and 2 months. In all four adoption I had everal good leads both before and after placement.

2 examples to share

I know 2 couples who both were matched very quickly for AA/CC babies. I will add that both these couples are also bi-racial (I don't know if that added to the speed with which they were matched or not).

In both cases the couples had the same agency experience. The agencies hustled them through the paperwork, homestudy process as fast as possible and they were immediately matched.

Good luck!

We are a biracial couple (cc/aa), and wanted a biracial infant...it didn't take long at all before we were presented with a few potential situations. Three, in fact...within a month of everything being comlpeted. For various reasons, we had to turn them down. Not even 2 months after having everything completed, we were matched with our wonderful, fabulous, (insert any positive adjective here and it would be applicable) bmom.
If I can be of any more help, please let me know...

We started the whole process in Jan. 2001. (looking for an agency) We found an agency, got all paper work done (home study included) and submitted our Dear Birthmother books all by Oct of that same year. We got the call about our son on Jan. 3 2002.

We are a bi racial couple so that is what we decided to adopt a bi-racial child. But, we got calls about AA child even before our home study was done. So it can go really fast. Our agency said it should take about 9 months. We just got really lucky. In more ways then one.

We went the independent adoption route, so I don't have any experience with agency adoption, but we matched with our son's bmom very quickly -- about a month and a half after making the decision to start up with our plan to adopt. He was born a month after his birthmom chose us.

FWIW, we're both CC and were open to parenting a child of any race. Our son is biracial/multiracial (bdad's racial background is unknown but was a person of color, and assumed by bmom to be AA or biracial).

We have adopted 3 times. First wait was 8 months, second adoption our agency just called out of the blue wanting to know if we were ready to adopt again. We were placed with baby 2 months later. For our third adoption we waited 5 months. Two of our kids are aa/cc and one is aa.

our home study was completed, but not typed, our profile was done, we had signed with the agency and awaiting our social worker to complete the typing of the home study. they are large and have an internet site and have potential situations, you can see birthmoms, available. well we sent our profile to this birthmoms case worker and the bmom picked us! we had a conf call that night and were on a plane that weekend to meet her. AA/CC/H baby girl due first of may! Good luck. I know our situation is highly unusual. I picked our agency because i felt like i could be proactive in the bmom situation. by the way the wait time for them is less than 6 mos. (avg.)

With our first adoption we turned in all paperwork end of February 2000. Got matched Independently end of March. RUSHED homestudy and our daughter was born May 2nd.

With #2 (AA Daughter) we updated homestudy in May 2002, registered in June & our daughter was placed in our arms July 18th!

With #3 we updated our Homestudy in June 2003, registered also in June but told them to try to match us AFTER September. Got the call on August 8th. Officially matched on August 25th & our son was born September 14.

So we were matched VERY quickly. We too had situations come up in between those also. We had a failed adoption in January 2002. We were there for the 42 hours of labor, cut his cord, etc. BMom changed her mind the day of signing the papers. There were also others that we turned down for various reason or situations we were presented to the BMoms but she choose a different family.

All wait & match times vary. But I think your agency is right about the average wait times they gave you.

GOOD LUCK!!

Deb
