Has anyone been in the finalization stage of the adoption and had to have a publication done because the birthparents were unable to be found at the time of the finalization ? This is happening to my family. Our case was presented in front of the judge in the state where our son was born. The birthmother has not been heard from since his birth. She signed the relinguishment right after he was born. Now they are publishing in local newspapers. Our caseworker said there is nothing to worry about, I was just a little concerned... and confused..

We had to run an ad in the papers in Albq. NM to terminate 2 potential bfathers. The ad ran for 2 weeks ( I think) 3 days a week. Don't quote me on this, because it was 5 years ago and I am rusty. They posted ours in the legal section in the classified ads. ( you know, the ones that NOBODY reads?) I'm sure all will be fine

We had to run an add as well.....just to make sure that all attempts to notify them have been made. No one was contesting in our case...just couldnt find him after the hospital visit. In our case, the adds didnt work....but he did contact the agency eventually on his own and handed in some forms. I wouldnt worry....its just making sure all of your t's are crossed, ya know?

We had to run ads for two consecutive weekends. The bdad didn't see them. It only required that it be a circulated paper. It didn't have to be the highest circulation. It had to be in the last know town that he resided. Anyway, he was living 1500 miles away and we published there. As I said, he didn't see it but he ended up contacting us and showing up during the process and signed reliquishment papers. Don't worry.

ditto....don't worry. We had to postpone finalization for 45 days to publish on any pbfather since no DNA test had been done on the youngest. We could have gone ahead with his sister as bparents had signed relenquishment, but we wanted them to have the same adoption day.

We also had to run an ad for a potential Birthfather. I think this is fairly common.

They usually run the ads in an obscure part of the newspaper that nobody reads. Here in CA they have to run the ad for a month. (I am a foster parent. It could be a shorter period of time for private adoptions) If the bmother has already signed the papers, I don't understand why they are doing a search. Must be some formality. Good luck!!!!!

To whoever left the annon. remark. (You know what I mean) I did not say it is okay to put it in a place where it is not usually read. I said that is what SS does here in CA. It is a fact, not my opinion. I did not state my oipinion on the matter.

In TN, they check the putative father registry and run an ad. They put it in the part of the paper here where they put the house foreclosures, etc...very similar to what skootinalong said.

To add onto what Teralyn said...it is what is done. They do run these ads in papers that no one reads. I also am not saying it is the correct way to do it by any means...just stating the facts.
I also find it odd that they are doing this "search" if bmom has already terminated. Has bfather terminated also? Is this search for him? We ran ads to search for our daughters bfather. The trouble with doing that is he had skipped town so it did little good. And to those who are ready to pounce...we also tracked down his last known address (left no forwarding with anyone) and checked his last known employer (also no forwarding info) this was done though at the time her bmom terminated her rights, long (4 months) before finalization. In the state where our son was relinquished, pbmom had to appear at the hearing in person to state her intention to relinquish to the judge even though she had signed papers. Perhaps that is why they are searching for her in this case.
On the other hand, pbdad did not have to appear in court. He could have instead signed papers to submit for the hearing. But because he had evaded service of the court papers repeatedly, ads were published in the paper per court order. In his case it was a blessing for him that the ad was discrete. It was a small city paper, and it was not to inform him of anything (we had been in continuous dialog with him, and he with the SW), but to adhere to a judge's ruling. |

I LOVE it when people leave negative remarks and aren't brave enough to name themselves. I simply said that no one reads the ads, right or wrong, thats the way it is. We had to TPR 3 different potential fathers ( we had to run an ad for 2 of them), not one gave a rats behind about our precious baby, so I make no apology for whatever you THOUGHT I meant.
