Anybody with advice on walkers????

You guys were so helpful in helping me choose a carseat...I thought I'd try here again
I know not everybody is keen on using walkers, but we've decided to get one for our daughter and I'm hoping that you all might have some advice on a good one to get...
Hope everyone has a super day!

hi,

we were told no walkers because they're unstable and the source of many injuries. that said, I think it's cuz people stick their kid in them and then walk away (very tempting). My guess is that they're safer if you stay right there all the time, and block the doorways so kid can't escape in them. We bought dd an entertainment center instead. both walkers and entertainers are believed by some to slow development, so we limit dd's time in it to 10 minutes a day.

good luck finding one if that's the way you decide to go,

LisaCA

We don't really like walkers or the entertainment centers. We did, however, purchase a Deluxe Jumperoo (by Fisher-Price, I think) and love it. DS jumps away, so we like that it might be strengthening his legs rather than just supporting him.

We have had both excersaucers and entertainment centers (that don't have wheels). I actually liked the excersaucer that just had a tray circle around it, that way I could put things on it, more than the more popular entertainment centers with all the doo dads. If I were to do it again, I'd probably buy one that had a tray area and some doo dads - we actually were told the same about them - that they delay development, rather than promote it..... but all things in moderation I say....sometimes YOU and BABY need a change of scenery (or a shower!) Our twins were slightly delayed, so we did limit them at the suggestion of early intervention, although we loved them sooo

I see them often at resale stores. you might try one.

Hi,

I also bought the Jumperoo by fisher price, it is great! The baby loved it from about 4 months to about 8 months, and still enjoys it occasionally now at almost 10 months. A friend of mine bought the exersaucer ultra by evenflo, and thier little girl still plays in it occasionally at 1 yr old, my son liked it as well when we visited, they are nice for times like dinner when the baby isn't sitting in the highchair, or for showers!
As far as the walker goes, even though we live in a 1 story house that is pretty much completely baby safe, we were told we couldn't have one (we are foster adopt) because the baby might travel somewhere dangerous. I guess like Lisa said, some people used walkers as a babysitter, so they gave them a bad wrap.

:-) Carrie

We also bought a Jumperoo!! I love it, it's the best thing. My son used it from 3 - 9 months and he doesn't mind going it in off on now at 11 months but he only stays in it about 5 minutes, he'd rather tour around now that he's walking. My sister also has one for her baby (6 months) and she has a 3 year old that loves going in it. It's nice for her to have a break. (Her 3 yr old only weighs 27 lbs., she's tiny).

Anyway, I can't believe you guys can still buy walkers. In Canada they're against the law, no stores sell them, not even resale stores. It's even illegal to sell them at garage sales.

Stacy

Hi... I've always been a lurker but I did want to reply to this. We, well... Santa got our son a walker (the kind baby holds onto and pushes not the kind baby sits in) for Chistmas. I've also read of the dangers but... what we do is go into his room... put the gate up at his door and sit at either end of his room and let him walk back and forth. It does not leave his room so I feel really safe with it. I love it and so does he... it's the first thing he crawls to when we go into his room. It's the Learning Band Walker from Leapfrog. He is now 10 months and just started to walk heel to toe with it last night. He was always walking on his tiptoes. I think it's helped him alot. Hope this helps, Cheri

Stacy, Walkers are still sold in the US, but I think most pediatricians warn about the serious injuries that can occur along with the possibility of a delay in gross motor skills by using them. I think every physical therapist in our country tries hard to reach those within their realm of communication and advises VERY STRONGLY against their use.

We used a "Rock & Fun"

Our little guy loved it.

Walkers have been banned for several years here in Canada.

As Stacy has already said, you cannot even buy one second hand anywhere as you are not allowed to sell them.

Also, a good point to keep in mind (we were told this by our pediatrician) is to not put your child in any of the items listed unless the child is able to sit on their own. They need to be able to support themselves.

We have a wagon, made by Radio Flyer, that baby pushed around. It has clickers on the back wheels to make it hard to push forwards and back so it won't roll over baby or away form baby too easily (unless you're on the driveway ). It makes a real racket when wheeled around, and that really got baby into using it- noise=fun. Now baby, at 20 months, puts toys in it and gives them rides around the house.

hi,

just got my toys r us catalog full of baby stuff and they have a neat cross between a walker and an exersaucer.

it's called the fisher price Intellitainer and is new. It's 74.99 with the coupon and the text reads:

seat rotates 360 degrees and allows child to walk back and forth in a contained environment. includes 14 fun activities with music, rhyming and sound effects. rewards and encourages natural stepping motion. builds music awareness, language, listening and number skills. ages 4months -up.

anyway, it looks great! the kid can walk a couple of steps one way then can turn 180 degrees and to the other way, all without actually going anywhere.

thought this might work. btw, we tried the jumperoo and dd hated it. just sat there and refused to jump, no matter what. we then bought the baby einstein discover and play activity center and that was a total hit. my suggestion: go to babies r us or toys r us and try your child in it. saves the assembly, disassembly and return.

good luck!

LisaCA
