I would assume that any help to make the security deposit and make first month's rent for an apartment would happen well before finalization since if you're doing this all in CA it will take six months to finalize.

It is tricky for this not to seem coersive, is there a way for it not to be perceved that way by the expectant mother? What about if the offer was there for her regardless of her placing, would that make a difference? I am asking both Poulla and the other posters at large. Honestly, I have a hard time imagining setting someone up in an extended stay place, in a temporary situation if their life is already on shaky ground, if the same money could be spent on an apartment that held more permenance and was more of a "home." If the monetary sum is the same, how does one have the possibiltiy to be coersive and the other less so? I am not trying to be naive. Monetary support was not a factor in our adoption, so I haven't any direct experience.

So to Poulla, if you were to make the offer of help for either the extended stay or an apartment regardless of placement, would that help you to not feel like a vulture? And to the posters at large, is that even a good idea? (BTW, by help I do not mean co-signing for anything!)

I agree, you are not adopting her and did not create the situation she is in. I do understand you're wanting to help. Can't the SW help her find resources as well?

That extended stay pricing sounds like a Residence Inn, which is like the Waldorf Astoria of extended stay hotels. You can also Google "Extended Stay Hotels" and see what turns up for your area.

Most will run from $150 - $300 a WEEK - check out Extended Stay America, Sun Suites, Suburban Inn, and InTown Suites - they are some of the chains.

Also when you make a reservation ask if they have a monthly rate or will discount for a long reservation - most will readily do so if paid up front.

BTW I agree with everyone - you pay your lawyer to advise you so follow their advice. :-) As far as post-placement assistance, again, only do what your lawyer advises and how they advise. There's a big difference between paying the rent for 6 weeks and cosigning a lease for a year.

Tyhanks everyone for your input, Palmdale CA is where I need to find an extended stay hotel/apartment. Anyone have any ideas for anything that costs under... just the five grand a month?!

extendedstayhotels.com.

Remember: Do not go by quoted rates on website - they are per day only. Contact the hotel and ask for weekly & monthly rates, they have them and they are less.

Best of luck.
