Looking for general info - is there such a thing as independent adoption in SC? We have a cousin who is due to deliver next month. She had decided to put the child up for adoption and my husband and I are interested in becoming the adoptive parents. This is the first time we have considered adoption so we have not done a home study or anything. Trying to find out if we must go thru the state DSS or can we arrange something privately with an attorney and what steps that would involve.
Any info would be appreciated.

We also are just starting out and found that there is allot on mis-information out there. We were very surprised. Our recommendation is to contact an local adoption lawyer and tell him/her your situation. The lawyer can tell you what is required and what can be done in the short amount of time. In most cases, the legal system can be geared up to help you.
