From what I understand a facilator is an organization that finds a birthmom for you. Some will offer counseling.

The facilitators I looked into only did bmom searches. So you had to do your homestudy through another agency AND also get a lawyer to handle all the legal stuff, which of course adds on to the cost.

The one I looked into had a set fee ($8000), helped you set up your adoption website and write a bmom letter. But then any counseling you or the bmom might want, the home study, and all the legal fees were extra. They estimated that the final cost would be between $15-30,000 with all the other costs in addition to there fee. Oh and there fee was only good for 2 years - what if you don't get a placement before that......or have a failed match or placement that drags it all on.

Anyways, we chose to use a private agency that basically takes care of everything for us except the finalization legalities.

I don't mean to sound negative about facilitators. It wasn't the right choice for us, but it might be for you :-)

And your question isn't silly! I had the hardest time trying to figure out the exact distinction in the beginning....and I'm sure there are others out there grateful for your question :-)

not a stupid question at all!

go to facilitators vs agencies. i think you will find it helpful.

we are using both.
