That is awful and of course you and your husband will need to deal with this in a way that meets the needs of your family. I'm glad you were able to confront her and it sounds like she might have heard you at least a little.

Where we are when an older couple has trouble with blight in their home and they are seriously needing help... even if they brought it all on by themselves you can have Adult Protective Services take a look and possibly help them out. It is a risk because APS can be a boondoggle. It is one option though if you and your husband feel like you need to get them help. It is not your responsibility to make things better for them though... I'm sure you know this but I say it anyhow. Families can be difficult and even moreso when it comes to children.
