OK. I know everyone has posted their responses and it has pretty much been determined that it isn't an issue with newborns. (I particularly liked the "sack of manure" response about Primal Wound)

I know WAY too many adoptees who don't fit that description of Verrier's - my cousins included.
I would just like to tell a story about my son. He is 5 years old, full Korean, is starting to learn about his adoption. We just had a Chinese exchange student stay with us for a month and just left for home a week ago. I decided out of the blue to take my son to Koreatown in Los Angeles and go shopping. As we were walking around he said, "Mommy, these people all look Chinese" I guess he was comparing them to our recent student. Later, as we were leaving he said, "Mommy, they don't look like us, do they?" While I know that he will eventually see the difference, at 5 he doesn't see the difference between his own looks and our looks. He is VERY attached to his daddy and me - if he had his way he'd sleep in our bed every night! We don't let him, however.
