Homestudy In An Apartment
Has anyone had a homestudy done in an apt? I am going to be a single adoptive parent and I live alone in a one bedroom (although very large) apartment.
Will this be a major problem for a homestudy? Now I do plan to move into a home in a year or so but for the meanwhile I didn't need a lot of extra space.... Any advice will be appreciated ![]() |

I could be wrong but I thought a child that you would adopt would need a bedroom of their own???

I think it just depends. I know with foster care it's okay to have a baby up to a certain age sleep in the parent's room. You might just have to have a certain sq ft of space specifically for the child. The apartment thing itself is not a problem -- we currently live in an apt. while we are waiting for our house to be built. We're adopting, and have done foster care from an apt for the past two years. But then, our dd does have her own room. If there is enough space, maybe they would let you put up a room divider or something?

We've been approved in an apartment. It wasn't any big deal. It did have 2 bedrooms though. Our cw said that there was a legal limit for sq footage, but that was it. And it said it was something ridiculously low & not to worry about it. He just wanted to make sure we weren't keeping the baby in the garage!

I know a woman (she's now 45) who lives in a two bedroom condo with her parents. She adopted a 15 month old from China two years ago and had no problem, even though there was not a separate bedroom for the child. She just went through a homestudy for a second adoption and was not approved because of lack of adequate space.

Call an adoption agency in your state and pose the question. It never hurts to ask. I have completed several adoption home studies in my state and approved several folks that lived in apartments, however, I have never run across the 2 bedroom thing. In our state, you could not get liscensed for foster care. You might be able to get a home study done and demonstrate an ability to move into a bigger place when need be. But the people that can tell you most accurately are the ones that complete home studies in your state. State laws can vary.
