Well, having adopted internationally we're not in an open adoption, but the grandparents' titles were a hot topic of discussion.
When my niece (brother's daughter) was born she called her maternal grandparents the same titles that her older cousin was using. That meant that Grandma and Grandpa and Nana were all taken (as well as other titles for the greatgrandparents). So my parents became Saba (Hebrew for grandfather) and Savta (grandmother). My mother's SO became Grumpy. When we adopted DD, my parents came to us and pleaded to be Grandma and Grandpa because they really didn't like being Saba and Savta ("I can never think of my name!" my mother said). My own "Grandma" and "Grandpa" had died (grandpa while we were waiting for dd, so we agreed and DH's parents became Grandmom and Grandpop and mom's SO is still Grumpy. SIL wasn't thrilled with it, thinking it would be confusing to her kids, but it's working for us. BTW, my paternal (and German) gparents were Oma and Opa. Yiddish is Bubbe (grandma) and Zaide (Zady grandpa). |

Growing up, all four of my grandparents were "Grandma and Granpa" to me.
Grandma and Grandpa S______. Grandma and Grandpa Y________. I was not confused at all. |
