I am very interested in breeastfeeding as well. My husband seems to think that it takes a lot of hormones and that these could potentially harm the baby. I have heard of many different things you can take both herbal and chemical. I hope to be seeing more info. on this thread so that we both get answers that we are seeking. |

There are several other threads here at Adoption Forums about adoptive nursing. Do a Search (see the tab above) and type in breastfeeding or nursing or lactation and the various threads should come up. There is so much great information here.
Good luck! Last edited by rastachris : 07-05-2004 at 11:51 AM. |

WOW!
WOW! THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!
I only wish we were adopting an infant! WE are adopting through foster care and don't have much hope of getting an infant but when we get more funds I want to adopt and infant! I would LOVE TO HAVE AN INFANT AND BREASTFEED! I really didn't know you could breast feed an infant you didn't give birth too. I guess I should read more. ( now i sound stupid). Well I will keep reading these forums because I am already learning so much more. Hoping to find some other hopefulls and Adoptive mom to befriend. Still getting butterflies about the whole thing. Home Study is in two weeks. thanks for listening

Foster/adoptive parent
You can get an infant from birth through fostercare that you may be able to adopt.
I just adopted a 4 year old in may and will be adopting a baby that we have had since birth in Oct. We got her when she was 5 days old and now she is 5 months. When we first got into fostering we wanted to adopt a baby or kid up to age 5. We were told that one of the secrets to getting a newborn baby is to start off fostering first or adopting a sibling group.. It has been a long hard road....and also very enjoyable.....but finally OUR baby did come and we were approved to also be her adoptive family when she was 7 weeks. So since that point I have been trying to build up a milk supply. Also if you really want a Baby....their are a ton of black or biracial babies out there that need homes. Your likelyhood of being placed with a baby would dramaticaly increase. And color makes no difference...you will love them the same. Our first fosterchild was as black as they come and she felt like she could have been mine.....if I could have i would have adopted her in a second. So be open to other races than your own...and you will be supprised how well they fit into your family and how color or race really does not make a difference. Another piece of advice is don't be so picky. No kid is going to be completely healthy and most likely will have labels placed on them like fetal alchohol syndrome....Reactive attatchment dissorde....r or ADHD or learning dissability. Once you get these children in your home you will be supprised how well you can handle different problems or challenges. You will also find that once the child is in a secure loving environment a lot of the symptoms dissapear or are better controlled. These kids have a ton of potential and just need a loving supportive home that they can call their own. Good luck on fostering and i hope you find the child out their that has been waiting and praying for a family like yours. |

Thanks for the advise! We are going in tomorrow for our next to the last office visit, as part of our home study.
I am filled with excitement, and a bit nervours. I am trying to make sure we have all our information gathered and ready to go. I still have a step to complete in order for them to "write" our homestudy and it was one that came up recently because we gained Gaurdianship of Elise. But other than that we are READY! We are SOOOO open to race, Elise is biracial and I have always wanted an AA or Mixed baby! I am in no way discriminate in this issue.... Thanks again!

Some firstmoms are horrified at the thought of amom breastfeeding and others think its wonderful (I'm one of the latter-Kara's mom wanted to breastfeed, but wasnt sure how to go about it) I think if that's your plan you should let the bmom know so she can get comfortable with it. She might be pretty shocked if you started breastfeeding in the hospital and she wasnt prepared for it. (assuming you're there in the hospital with her)

Our son's biomom was actually the one who suggested I try breastfeeding long before I was even aware that it was possible.. (She had breastfed her other children and is a big proponent for it.) I looked into it, but I just didn't think it was the right choice for us.
To be honest, I just didn't feel "right" about it.... mainly because I was afraid of what people would say when I told them. He gained plent of weight anyway, and is wonderfully active and healthy despite being *gasp* formula fed. Haha. Looking back, I rather wish I would have looked into it further. I let shyness and uncertainty keep me from sharing a very beautiful and bonding experience with my son. (though, he seems to have adjusted fine without it.... besides for a rather humorous preoccupation with the front of women's shirts.) If you think it's right for you I would talk to your local branch of the LeLecheLegue. But it is a good idea to start building a milk supply as soon as possible. |

hi,
thanks so much for your answer. But we have come to a snag in the road. Our birth mom has changed her mind. But we are still looking. We really like the idea of an open adoption so we are looking. |
