You can induce lactation without using prescription drugs like Reglan or Dom Peridon. What you need is a hospital-grade double breast pump, and start pumping every two to three hours for 15 minutes. You can take Fenugreek, a spice, which is known to help with lactation. You can find Fenugreek at most health-fodo stores or at your local women's hospital in the shop. My lactation specialist said to take like six Fenugreek tablets a day. Then, purchase a supplemental nursing system (Medela makes a great one). Use the SNS when your child nurses at your breast in order to make sure she's receiving adequate nutrition while stimulating your breasts. You may never produce enough to meet all of his/her needs, but some is better than none at all.

I tried to breastfeed both of my adopted kids, but it didn't work out for me for a variety of reasons, none of which had to do with the process of inducing lactation.

I think there have been other posts on this topic before, and there are many Websites out there with information on inducing lactation.

Good luck!

I saw the whole show and it was wonderful. The mom was pumping and took a drug or some med to help produce malk. Sorry I don't remember the med but it worked. Great story and I wish I could remember the drug sorry Tina

I watched the show. I am pretty sure she said she took birthcontrol pills and pumped regularly.

Your local La Leche League can probably help you with this.

LLL is a great organization but not real helpful with induced lactation. For the best info on that the web is the best source. Try : http://www.fourfriends.com/abrw/

As for the drugs used in the Newman /Goldfarb protocol it is only BCP and Domperidone which is a VERY benign reflux drug. No big side effects and not really a big deal. I have been on dom. on and off for the past five years (nursing two babies) with no side effcts except milk. You can indusce without anything at all but most people cannot build a full supply without domperidone. That may not be important to you but it was to me. It was more of a convienience thing, I am not a good "night time parent" having to bottle feed or suppliment with a Lact-aid at night is a big pain in the rear for me. I choose to take dom. to ensure enough of amilk supply that I don't have to suppliment at night. I can just latch the baby on and go back to sleep. Sleep is good.

People are amazed when I tell them that my baby wakes up three to four time every night (still working on that) because I don't look exhusted. That's because I'm not. I sleep thru most feedings because I am not dealing with a supplimenter.
