How long does the process really take?
We are beginning the process of adopting through public agency. Just wandering about a time frame. The lady I talked with said they have to have the home study done within 90 days, but that tells me nothing. How long from the time I send in the application to the time I bring home a child (we are probably adopting up to three years old) Thank you to everyone that posted on my last thread, everyone was so helpful and I feel much more confident about it.

When you say public agency, do you mean adopting through the Dept. of Social Services or through an adoption agency that places babies and children?
In either case, how long it takes depends on various factors. How long will it take for you to do all you need to do on your end? How quick will whoever you are working with process everything for you? What kind of availability is there for the type of child you hope to adopt? Are you being very specific or are you pretty much open? Depending on all of the above, it can make a difference on how long the process will take. Some adoptions happen in a matter of days, some take years. JJ |

A simple answer to your question? FOREVER!
These are the slowest moving rollercoaster wheels you are ever going to be on! We were fostering in the hopes of adopting, bc we were told the process would be faster. We were looking for a girl 5-10 yrs old. Only once (before our present kids were placed with us) did we ever have a child within our gender and age specs. SIX years later we have adopted our four foster children. Most of the people in my class have already adopted, but we said no to FAS so we waited a long time. If you are open to all races, all diagnoses, all challenges, you will probably have a child sooner. When we went through a private agency for a straight adoption hs, bc we were tired of dealing with DCFS, we were told it would take 90 days and it actually took 4 1/2 months. After a year with them, we were still didn't have our child and we were only called about two little girls. One was 3 yrs old and had CP and didn't walk (we have a 2 story house). The other was 4 and was in a RTC for severe emotional issues. Good luck. I think Anna went through an agency. She got a baby boy one yr old, but came with an older sister. Are you willing to adopt an older sibling?
