Hi
I'm single and am in the process of foster adoption through the state of Louisiana. I do not want to put my child in daycare and was wondering if anyone here knew of any legit work at home jobs that would bring in a decent salary? I know there are jobs out there. I have had a lot of receptionist experience and can type over 45 words a minute. I was just wondering if any of you moms has a work from home job and could give some advice! Thanks, Ashlea |

Hi Ashlea, I hear that medical transcriptionists make good money and therei s a high need for them. You may want to check into this. I would be very careful though with other work at home places and research throughly as there are a lot of scams out there. Judy

Hi Brandy,
I don't know too much about the Medical Transcriptionists. I do know that it is a legit business. The couple of women that I know who are doing this have contracted through doctors in our area. Wish I could be more helpful. Judy |

I have heard of that before. I'll check into it. If anyone else knows of anything, that'd be great |

Other jobs could include you being a consultant with plenty of flexibility in scheduling, and the possible ability of bringing your child with you - Amway, Avon, Tupperware, Mary Kay cosmetics, Usborne books, etc. There are tons of companies like that. If you're a good saleswoman, a single afternoon party for a few hours with a good order can net you as much as 3-4 days of a regular job salary.
Or consider opening your own childcare - take some additional "regular" child development classes in addition to the special ones required by the state for foster adoption. Lots of people look for small personal inhome daycares like that. But that is opening your own business, so be sure you're OK with handling accounting books and the like. Some telemarketing companies allow experienced workers to work from home. They dial in to the company's network and then place their calls. (Dial-a-psychic "psychics" operate this way, too, but I don't know if that counts as legitimate!) Good luck! |

if you have a work from home type of job, how do you get health insurance for yourself?

Health Insurance
McKenna;
There are alot of Companies who have Self Employed Health Insurance! I chose Blue Cross/Blue Shield for both myself and my Daughters because the appointments are scheduled. Instead of with Medicaid or Medi-Cal where you go and wait in line or take a number to be seen, and then don't even see a Doctor. It was cheaper taking out individual policies for Daughters. If you want I would be more than happy to help you do an Online Search.

I wouldn't get into Avon, Mary Kay, or any of those sales business' unless you are prepared to take a lot of time away from your family. Sure you may make some good money at some of these parties, but there is a lot of work involved before the parties. And a lot of time spent generating customers. They make all of these type of business' sound real easy and they swear by all the money you'll make for just a couple hours of work per week, but that's not the reality. You really have to work long hours and work your buns off to make good money. You also need to be a very assertive person and bug people all the time. Oh and it's not reliable income. One month could be feast the next famine which doesn't cut it if you're trying to plan for bills, food, etc...
I know because I did Avon, Mary Kay, greeting cards, blue/green alge, Jafra, and Oraflame. Judy |

I've been searching all day on the internet for work at home jobs and only find ones that seem like scams.

Here are a couple of ideas. You could open a in home daycare center. Depending on where you live, you could probably earn $100-$200 a week per child.
Another idea is if you have a large enough home and live in an area that has tourism, is to open a bed & breakfast. JJ |

Work at Home Jobs
I have been self-employed for many years...My husband is a contractor and I take care of all of his accounting and contracts, and within the last year I trained to become a Travel Agent from my home.
Of course, these are self-employment jobs and there is quite a bit of bookkeeping to go along with it, but I love working my own hours. I started my travel agent job by searching on the internet and worked under a company with a 50/50 split on commission, but this particular company did not do any type of training, just told you how to book cruises and tours etc.. I then did a search and found a company that did a 5 day training class in Ft. Lauderdale, and I love working with this company. I am essentially self-employed, but all I have to do is advertise, book the vacations and the home office does all the back-office work. We then split commission 50/50. I have averaged $2000.00 per month on the high months and made as little as $500.00 per month on the slow months. But of course being self-employed is different than working for a company that pays you directly to stay at home..BUT the tax-benefits are tremendous. I also prepare taxes during tax season from my home. There are many opportunities to make an income from home, it just takes plenty of research and self-discipline. If you would like to know more information of how to start your own home-based business, feel free to email me at cleopard@msn.com . I will be happy to explain the tax benefits etc. As far as health insurance, we adopted our daughter from the fostercare system, and she is on Medicaid, and we do not have any, we have purchased some in the past, but found that there are some benefits to not having insurance, such as free samples from the doctors office, and discount fees at dr. office etc.. I can honestly say, I have been self-employed since 1987, and would not go back to working a regular 9-5 job with bosses .~Carol~ |

Ashlea ~ I started taking a Medical Transcription course at home through At-Home Professionals. I haven't completed it . . . in fact, I only completed the first course . . . I had to discontinue it because I was trying to take care of a toddler and became too difficult to study. That's not to say that you wouldn't be able to though. Their courses are very well written and organized. Their instructors evaluate your assignments and answer any questions you might have throughout the course. They are VERY helpful. Each course costs approx. $450.00 (I had five $100.00 coupons making it only $350.00 per course, which helped). I've heard of many people starting their own business with Medical Transcription and even employing others to handle the workload. The reason that Medical Transcription is in such high demand is because every time you visit the doctor ~ your doctor is required by law to have everything that was said or done at that visit in type-written form on record. The phone number to At-Home Professionals is 1-800-347-7899, M-F, 7 am to 6 pm Mountain Time. Hope this helps. Good luck to you.

Part II
In doing Foster Care, you need to find something that is also salary and not total commission.
You need to be able to account for your earnings on a monthly basis.

This may take you a little while, but the end result can be wonderful. Try massage school. I went through school and I have an office out of my home. You can earn anywhere from $40-60 per massage. It is a growing field. The nice thing is you can hook up with a chiropractor or a day spa if you need to or want to go to work for someone too. I do have a full time job because I had to provide benefits for my entire family since dh has his own contractors business but it is nice to have something to fall back on and for additional cash. Another option is direct sales(I use this for additional cash) as many have said there are all kinds I myself sell for Affordable Luxuries(a candle company) we have our own websites and we can sell to little shops at whole sale. There is insurance through the direct sales association too, but I just don't remember how you can go about it all. Let me know if you have any questions on either option.
