What happens to the original BC after adoption ?
When I gave birth to my son i was able to name him and on his birth certificate from the state it said the name I had given him and mine. The adoption agency I used said the Aparents could change the name if they wanted to ( actually I do not even think they were told what I named him ) --------
so what happens to that birth certificate ? where does it go ? can you still get copies of it ? do they just make a new one for him ? wouldn't that throw of the census people ? how confused am I and after 18 years I am just wondering this. Does anyone know ? ![]() |

I had to petition the state to get my original birth certificate. somehow, they are kept, but not accessible. Even when I sent the court order to the office of vital statistics, they sent the amended birth certificate. I had to phone several times to get the original. It seemed to make them very nervous. Well, I have it now! Love, Debi

Debi-
Why do they not just give us what is ours?? In your case your Birth Certificate ? If there are Bmothers out there ( i can not even imagine ) that do not want contact then let thembe the ones to have the court hide the BC's away. I have no problem if people want to know who I am, I think my son has that right. If he ever wanted to contact me I would hope they would not make him work to do it. This drives me insane. Thanks for telling me though errrr. I hate the thought of that. ![]() |

In our case, I have found that with open adoptions, the adoptive parents get a copy of the OBC and then also receive the amended BC, once the adoption is finalized.
Even if the adoptive parents kept the first and middle names you gave your son, I'm sure they would have changed his last name to theirs. As far as the census people go, my "guess" is that they would count people where they currently lived. Have you asked whoever handled the adoption process for you about obtaining a copy of the OBC? obc
I am currently going through a huge fiasco with this with New York state. The way it was explained to me is like this: until the adoption is finalized *I* (the birthmom) and the "mother-of-record" with the State of New York and I have acess to the original birth certifiacte. I think at this time, it's the only bc, but I may be wrong. Anyway, once the adoption is finalized (and I know from the lawyer a copy of the obc will go into the file), then my version is sealed and a new one is issued with the adoptive parents names on it. I would assume that after 18 years, you will in fact need a court order or something similar to get a copy of the certificate.
Good luck, Ress
