What a beautiful little boy! What happened to his birth Mom if you don't mind me asking? That is so sad.

The birthmother died mysteriously in her sleep the day before Father's Day. At this point the autopsy reports are not back yet. They do not suspect anything like an overdose or homicide. Apparently she had developed an infection and it was pretty bad even after being treated. I think the "theory" at this point was that she developed sepsis and it affected her heart. She also quite heavy.
We're all still anxiously waiting for the mystery to be solved. Thanks for your concern. - Marty |

Daer Marty and Joe, I saw your story today on Adoption Stories. I had to surf the net to find you guys. God Bless you both! I cried while watching your story. My husband and I had an experience with adoption where our hearts were broken a few years ago. I'm hapy to see it worked so well for the two of you.
I know you will be a happy, loving family. I'm a happily married wife and mother of 2 great kids 11 and 14. Enjoy your son, it goes very fast. I also have a very dear and loved friend who I went to high school with who happens to be gay. He and his companion are my children's uncles. I know there is alot of controversay around gay marriages and adoptions but if people aren't so ready to judge what they have no idea about, this world would be a much better place for our kids. I commend you and Joe for giving us your story. Emily was your angel. A short life but a life filled with so much heartbreak. She died an angel though. I just wanted to say how blessed you both are and how warming a story it is. Also, Joe has a very big resemblance to now retired baseball player Mark Portugal whom I am a big fan of May God bless this family. Thanks for sharing it with the world! Francine |

Re: DHC Adoption Story
WOW, Marty! I feel like I'm posting to a celebrity...lol. I have recently become addicted to DHC's Adoption Story b/c of wanting to adopt. I saw your adoption story twice. Congratulations on being blessed with such a wonderful son and a wonderful family!
Oh yes, and I meant to ask (if I may), how did you end up with your story on that show? I always wonder that when I'm watching. |

I saw it and so did my mother
My mother was down painting my bathroom. Adoption Story came on and she kept painting but as soon as she heard the opening about the too of you. She came in the living room and we sat there in shock watching the whole thing. Mainly crying tears of joy for the two of you. Then when we heard the end and the death of the bmother. We started crying so hard. All day you two were the focus of our conversations. I have prayed for the two of you for the past few night.
Your story has givien my husband and I hope. My husband is in his mid 20's and I am in my early 20's. Even though we have a wonderful life together people still feel the need to make comments. The day I saw your story. I began to look at the comments differently. I am sure you had many comments that hurt but you two focused on the love of Devon. You have touched my life in so many ways. You gave me hope. Good Luck Saving up for Reagan or Caleb Waiting for Vietnam to sign the MOU |

Marty and Joe,
Unfortunately we missed your episode - will DHC repeat it any time in the future? We also checked out your website - what a wonderful story but a sad ending for Emily. Our sincere condolences to your family. |

Okay, I'm one of the few people left in the world without cable/dish. I might just have to sign up now!
As part of a lesbian couple hoping to adopt it is really comforting to her success stories from other same-sex couples. Thanks for sharing yours. Lori

I missed the story too. I have been frustrated with the "Adoption Stories" on DHC because they never seem to have any new ones. They're always the same ones they've been showing for months now.
I got excited last night because they had what they called an "Adoption Story Special" I thought finally something new!! But was disappointed to find they were a collection of the same stories that they show every week. Does anyone know when they might start having some new stories?? In the meantime I've been watching "Adoption" Sunday nights on the Hallmark station and enjoying it. They always have new stories then a segment on checking in on previous families to see how they have been doing since they first aired their story. This Sunday is children who have been adopted through foster care and I think about a disruption too. Judy |

Marty and Joe, I have seen your story many times. I can't believe you are on this forum. I always thought your story was so neat, because the birthmother really wanted a same sex couple to raise her baby so it would be open minded. I am sorry to hear about her passing. I always wandered what happened after the show. Thanks for sharing.
