Adoption support dollars for Foster Child

We are almost done with the adoption of our Foster child. We are currently filling out paper work for adoption support. Our child is 18 months old and appears to be normal...however he was exposed to high methamphetamine use by the birth mother...She admitted to using heavily...however the baby's tox screen was negative. I have read reports that problems with meth use may not surface until the child is at school age. Here's my problem...I have NO idea how much $$ to put down as a request for adoption support from the state...since he seems normal now...but may have problems later. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks so much. We are so happy we will be finalizing this soon. We don't care about the money...but if there are problems later it would be nice to have some help. Thanks again.

Hi Happy 9

Hope this helps at least some. I could not even begin to tell you what $ amount to put down. But here in Texas if you apply for subsidy and are denied which with what you have describe you would be here, if something comes up later that is as a result of the exposure then you could have it reopened for subsidy. I am really tired tonight I sure hope that make sense. I have a 15 month old that was exposed also we have finalized and this is what we were told to do.

Thank you for your answers.

Does adoption support look down on you for asking for 90%? I mean does it matter how much money you make. We have some rental properties, but we are land rich and cash poor...so I don't want it to look like we are out for money. Our child is the most important person in our lives and that's all that matters to us...we finally have a family! (after 10 years of infertility.)

I don't think so. in Okla. the support is not based on your income its based on the needs of the child the little boy we adopted was a very sick he had TB at age 18mo and almost died from the complactations & now at age 4 we are fighting JRA so we use our support for our transportation expences to the out of town Dr's and for daycare for our other foster kids. if your child quaifys for support ask the adoption spec. to help or ask your attorney for advise. Jimmy
