Adoption Books

I am looking for some good adoption reading material for myself and my daughter's Birth Mother.

Any suggestions?

There are so many good books. If you haven't read Dear Birthmother yet, I'd start there. Open Adoption Experience is also a great place to start. Enjoy!

Arrow Adoption Books

What about adoption books for adoptees placed through private adoptions, or adoptees dealing with issues stemming from the lack of knowledge, etc. about their birthparent's?

I would definetly be interested in some adoption-related reading material for summertime.

my favorite

My absolute favorite book about adoption is old and out of date from a political standpoint but it was such a comfort as I was waiting for our daughter:

"The Family that Nobody Wanted" was written in the late 50s or early 60s and is about a family that adopted 12 children from various ethnic backgrounds, back in the days when people usually adopted only from their own ethnic group. It's uplifting and probably idealized. The language is outdated but it is about love and helped remind me about why I was putting myself through the torture of trying to adopt. I first read it when I was a child and I'm sure it influenced our decision to adopt.

For a more practical look at a adoption, I also recommend Lois Melina's "Raising Adopted Children."

Anything by James Gritter is excellent!

Adoption Without Fear is the title of a book we read when learning about what open adoption can mean. I leant the book to both of our childrens' birth mom's so they could read it as well as our daughter's birth father. Excellent to say the least!! Very easy to read in that if you only have a few minutes here and there, you can read an entire "short story" in no time. The other one that's really great is Life Givers also by James Gritter!
