I recall several years ago that a baby in need of a transplant was denied because his parents were young (teemagers, early twenties) and the hospital thought they could not be responsible enough to give him the anti-rejection drugs and proper post-surgical treatment. In order to get their son back on the list they had to sign him over to grandparents. There was no indication that his parents were neglectful or abusive -- they were just "too young" in the eyes of the hospital.

As a kidney transplant recipiant that is the most horrible thing you can do. There are plenty of people in good homes that dont do what they need to do to take their pills and comply with the treatment plan. They are biased against this poor kid because he was unlucky enough to be placed into foster care. Shame on them. It is the states job to be able to provide a stable home for this child. He deserves a chance as a second shot at life.

If I were closer I would tajke this boy myself at least until he recooperates and they find a forever family. Both DH and I are so saddened by this. For crying out loud aninimakl shelter treat sick dogs and cats better and people line up to adopt them. I pray that a loving family comes forward. Poor kid.

I can see requesting a court order for additional monitoring of the care of the child, but to remove from the list is inhumane!

It may seem inhumane and crazy, but if he gets a liver, someone else doesn't. The reality is that people die while waiting for organs and to give an organ to someone who can't care for it, means someone else is denied an organ. It is terrible for this child, but if he get a liver and then dies from complications after the transplant, he is just suffering more. To put him through a really big, tough surgery, only to reject the liver later and die from liver failure is not fair.
Until everyone is an organ donor and we have enough organs to go around, the sad reality is that people die on the waiting list.
I work in pediatrics and see kids waiting and see what happens when they do not take their meds. I am not heartless but know the reality.

I am a kidney transplant recipiant and know many people who have been on dialysis again after a kidney transplant because of non compliance. There are people from all walks of life who appear responsible on paper but do not comply aftewards because they become lax. To deny this boy a life saving transplant because he is a foster child is a tragedy. Because his parents could not care for him he now does not deserve a shot at life? Yes there is a long waiting list and I waited five years for my kidney but he should have the same chance as anyone else. If they give smokers a second chance and accept their promise to stop smoking and if they give alcohol abusers a second chance and trust that they will stop drinking, than this boy should have a chance hands down.
