we have a WORD!!!

Well, I know this won't seem like much, but, since I've been *super* worried about A's development, I am ECSTATIC to be able to announce that, at 19.5 months, we finally have a word. That's right, he can sign "more", both when prompted, and to ask for things. He still doesn't point at what he wants, but he will sign "more" while looking at whatever it is that he wants. This is his first real attempt to communicate with more than fussing. And, it has already reduced the fussing, since I can ask him to sign "more" instead of whining/fussing.

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

YAY! Here's hoping more words follow! I've taught a few signs to my 15 month old - it makes communication a little easier and he gets less frustrated. He's starting to talk, but signing helps out so much. I'm so happy your little one has made the connection

Love that word!! Our FS was 23 months when he came to us. He would point and whine, but not talk. It was actually his brother's therapist who showed us some signs, as he didn't have a SP yet. Anyway, even now, 8 months after he has started talking (and will now use multiple word sentences) he uses the sign when he REALLY wants something. It is the most hilarious thing to see. It is as if say it and signing it gives it more !!!!!. Also, the faster you sign (in his mind) the more you want it and the more likely you are to get it. Sometimes I give in just because it makes me laugh. Not the right reason to give in, but I just cann't help it all the time.

So glad communication is starting to happen. It really does help with the tantrums. Hopefully one word will lead to many more, especially when he sees that it works. What are some others you are teaching to go along with this? drink and food are some easy ones that may be relevant several times a day. In our case, thinking back, I probably should have taught them "outside". Though them standing at the window pointing and whining, or running to the door with shoes in hand, was pretty clear. Have fun seeing his world begin to open up.

Okay, I had to chuckle this evening when I put the munchkin in his crib and he stood right up and started clapping (his version of "more" at the moment - he doesn't have the full "closed-hand" thing yet). It was obvious that he wanted "more" out of the crib, or "more" of me...so it's a generalized "please give it to me!" type of word at the moment He just stared at me clapping, like, "figure it out! I want IT!" Anyway it comes, I will take it - just glad that he's realizing that he can purposefully direct communication and "ask!"

That's very cute! Congratulations on the new word! What a big step for the little guy!

Your description made me smile, because it reminds me of my son at 1. We tried sign but he only ever learned 2 of them. "More" - which meant, "yes!" "I want that!" "Give it to me!" and "All done" - which meant, "No!" "Put me down!" "I don't like it!"

Two words for his all purpose communication!
