What Comes After TPR?
I know...I know......I am getting ahead of myself for the moment. TPR HASN"T happened yet, but the trial is half-way done and I'm choosing to think positively (for the day anyways).KWIM
We have had J for 18 months and plan to adopt if tpr happens. I hear alot on these boards about SNAP approval but don't really know what that is. I know that there is an adoption "approval process" and review board. How does all that work? Is it a difficult process? We have never had a problem with the foster parent licensing/re-licensing process. (Just re-licensed this month). Are there many scenarios that would lead to not being approved to adopt J? It seems I go from one thing to worry about to the next!!!! Also- I know after the last trial date the judge has 90 days to render a decision then if tpr happens the bios have 30 days to file an appeal. IF they don't what kind of time frame would we be looking at--if its possible to put an "average" on this. Thank you

I know that feeling of having it almost done. We are waiting for our judgement right now.. However, we are in the process of adopting another little one right now.. This has been the process.
1. TPR decision 2. Waiting out the supervisory period 3. During this time we have had an adoptive homestudy(a little bit different from the foster homestudy) 4. Signed Preadoptive placement agreement. (hired a lawyer) 5. Filed for Adoptive assitance for the little one 6. Got that approved. 7. Signed the agreement for the adoptive assitance. 8. Waiting for the 3 month to be over. 9. File for the adoptive date (TBA) 10. Adoption (TBA) We had an amazing licensing worker that is really on the ball. Other foster parents have not been so lucky. This process could take months or just a month... Hope this help!!! 9

I'm in the situation that judge ruled TPR but we're waiting for the appeals period. Here it's 60 days. I'm assuming birthmom will appeal (she has nothing to lose). I'm a little confused about the process too. It seems like we're in limbo until an appeal is ruled on and I'm not sure if we sign the placement agreement now or after the appeal is ruled on. We do have an adoptions worker and have been ruled as the permanent placement but I'm not sure what happens now.

Always remember that requesting an appeal does not mean she will GET an appeal. Here, they give an appeal for anything. Then a trial date is set where the DA shows evidence, the CW and investigators testify, sometimes a foster parent will testify, etc. It's a real trial. Sometimes it is before a judge only, sometimes it's before a jury. A decision is made.
There is no real way ti put a time frame on it as every area wrks differently. For adoption #1 we adopted about 8 month after TPR. For adoption #2 it was 7 months. HTH!

In our case TPR was granted in February 2008, we finalized on two of the kids in August 2009 and we are still waiting to finalize on the third kid. The length of time it took had more to do with budget issues and inept caseworkers.

March 2 was TPR, the 17 month mark in our kids' case. We had a 90 day wait period--30 for appeals and 60 for some other reason that I don't remember. That took us to June 2. That was the date they became legally free for adoption. Our agency won't do an adoptive homestudy until then, so we started the update the week after. Then there were all of the meetings with the state adoption worker, but only after she got the file on them. Then our attorney got the paperwork and he started his end of paperwork. Then we waited for the court to set a date. We finalized on September 24, 6 1/2 months after TPR.
It felt like forever but apparently it was a pretty quick turn around here. |
