Fostering outside of your county

Hello,

I was certified through the county that I live in, and I currently have a fd through that county's DSS. I signed a form when she first came to me saying that I would not foster through any other agency, as long as she was with me.

First of all, can anyone tell me if this is common practice, and what exactly is the reason for that?

Second of all, once I am done fostering her (either she goes to relatives, or I am able to adopt her), can I just put my name on a list of available foster homes, in a neighboring county? I work and live in 2 different counties, so I was considering trying to foster in the county I work in, but I'm not sure what that involves. If I'm even able to do that.

Thanks!

I work and live in different counties as well but the cw is the same for both counties...I live in the middle of no where. We have been licensed for 3 months with no placements and are considering opening our home to other counties. Our CW said it would just involve letting them know.

It probably depends on where you live. Here in central IN we are just licensed through the county that we accept placements and not the county we live in. We were licensed when we moved here though.

I have been called with children from several different counties in my area. I think that the dhhr here is all linked, so if we are licensed through them we can take children from any county here.

In NY, I was told that we could only foster kids in our county. for there to be an inter-county foster case, it has to be a special case.

We had to agree not to foster for any other agency. It is about supervision of the kids. We are with a private agency which gets kids from all over the state. The counties prefer the children to be placed near their home counties, but will place them farther if it is needed. I have been placed with kids from as far as 6 hours away.

we foster for a neighboring county...we are licensed directly with them....however e are able to do that because we are within 5-10 miles of the county line. the county we live in is smaller than the neighboring county that has a large city and greater need for foster families.

We can pick what counties in Texas we want to foster in and some counties will remove for some reasons that others won't. From what I understand occasionally they want the child out of county for safety if it's a volatile situation. But in general I've heard from many sources (parents, workers) that there are so many open foster homes in Texas right now that they will not place out of county and they can pick and choose where they want the kids to go. It's harder to remove a child in Texas now (thank you Gates). My concern is that that they have not done anything drastic to reduce the abuse in homes pre-removal so these kids are staying in situations longer which means they have been through more abuse/neglect and are older which is harder to place. Not a good thing.
