Watched The Locator and Had A Question?
I am obsessed with the show The Locator (on WE network).
Anyway, last week's was so heartwrenching. A little girl was with her foster family from 2.5 -7, called her foster mom and dad "mama" and "daddy," etc. The foster mom said that she was notified by the state that the FD was going to be adopted (not by a relative) and within a week FD was "gone." She said she never stopped thinking about her (and of course the poor girl was traumatized). They reunited and I bawled my eyes out. Anyway, my question is: did/does this kind of thing really happen? Wouldn't the FPs be asked to adopt her first (they said that they were always told the girl eventually would "reunite" with her bio mom). My Dh thinks the FPs weren't being entirely candid (as if they must have known and decided not to adopt her), but I disagreed with him (I don't know enough about the foster care process to know the answer to this). BTW, I think this was in NY. Just curious....! (And sad that that kind of thing could happen.) |

It wasn't that long ago that foster parents were absolutely not allowed to adopt their foster children. The general thinking was that if they were allowed to that they wouldn't work as hard as they should to help with a reunification plan.
I am so glad that this practice is no longer in place. Many children, like the little girl you mentioned would never have had that final move, which results in more trauma and can contribute to attachment issues.

Thank you for clarifying, Withay. OMG, I was heartbroken! These people were this little girl's family/parents and she always thought she did something "wrong" to be sent away...sigh!

hi
I read an article on that segment and the foster parents were asked to adopt but said no due to financial reasons. I've posted the article if you'd like to read it. The story broke my heart as well.

Oh, Birdie, thank you for the article. That part didn't really "come out" on the Locator episode. It was a tearjerker, wasn't it? (They all are!!).
