Working Foster Parents

Are there any here? We ultimately hope to adopt but are considering fostering to adopt as well. I'm just concerned about stability for the child. I work FT, DH works PT. I have some flexibility in my job but neither one of us is home all the time. We would have to use daycare for a few hours a day each week. Will child services allow parents like us - working outside the home - to foster? I can see where things like daycare may attribute to more instability.

eta...this would be less of an issue were we placed with a school aged child as DH works for the district

My husband and I both worked full time when we started two years ago up until march when he got laid off. We have had several infant placements and school age placements. Most of my kids loved day care. Child services will allow you to be foster parents and work outside the home. Good Luck to you. Any more questions just ask.

we both work ft, in our state they pay a subsidy to the child care. Soem will accept it as full payment, some will require additional payment. I have great flexibility so could make home visits and dr. apts., but required the state to facilite the week-day visits with bios.

Definitely check the rules for your county as they can vary. Where I live, you need to have a SAH parent to take a child younger than school-aged for foster placements, but the rule is waived for foster/adopt homes.

Both my DH and I work full time. State pays daycare fully (Texas).

We are direct with CPS. I think some private agencies may have different rules.

I work full time with a flexable sched and my works pt.

I work a 5am - 2pm and she leaves for work shortly after I get home a couple nights a week.

aside from the kiddos having to deal with my cooking, they seem prett well adjusted. Though things were really intense for the frist month.

I work FT, 3- 12 hour shifts per week from 3p-3a. And Don works PT 3-4 days a week 9a-3p. We use day care for a few hours 3 or so days a week and it is no problem. The state pays the costs. Also I have several friends who also foster and both work either FT or PT. I know my agency will not place heavily neglected children in a foster home that will be using FT childcare as it is not helpful to the child, however many other children can be placed in these homes w/o difficulty.

We are a licenced foster/adopt home and DH and I both work fulltime, although I have a flexible schedule and telework several days a week, with our FD at home with me. We are in WA, and the State pays all daycare costs. The fact that we work fulltime didn't impact our ability to receive a placement. Our CW did say that the State usually places medically fragile children with a SAHP.

Check with your agency on the rules in your State/county. Best wishes in your journey!

Both DH and I work FT, 8am - 5pm, 5 days a week. We've had one infant and two toddlers placed with us. All three went to daycare and the state (VA) picked up the cost. Because we are not SAH, we are not the first family to be called for a little one. We recognize this and understand their reasons (cost of daycare, transitioning to another care provider in addition to our home, etc.). However, we will not take a child older than R and that has resulted in months between placements.

It can be done and it is absolutely worth it. Good luck!!

Talking

I am single mom who works full time 4 10 hour days. But I have a great employer who is flexible with my time so I can attend appts and what not. I just finalized adoption on the 23rd of Sept. I adopted thru WA State.

What age range do you plan to Foster?

I am a single Mom who runs my own business. My original plan was Day Care. However, my first placement was 4 weeks old. So, Day Care was out until the baby was older. By then I was too attached. So, I hired a Nanny to take care of my FC. The Nanny has taken all of the required training thru my agency (I paid her) and she keeps her training hours up to date. As far as stability, this solution has worked out best for me. However, I take the real young ones.

We are foster/adopt legal risk in Texas. Our agency actually encourages day care for foster kids.

We are waiting to be matched and both plan to work full time.

We were just notified yesterday (after having our FD for 2 weeks) that my mother was not an option for childcare. Yet today they are going by her place to run background checks so she can continue to care for Baby V this and next week - until the Adjudication hearing next Friday. No one told us (reminded us?) that they would cover daycare - that's why I had my mom step in while I teach two classes, bc the monthly subsidy just covers what I'm paying her, and would never cover daycare. So now I know that they will pay for daycare, and they prefer that to a one-on-one foster family caregiver.

They knew our work schedule when they called about Baby V, yet now they were all but threatening to move her to another foster family who would be with her during the day! (She's 7 months, but hello! You knew where you were sending her, and should've been clearer about childcare expectations, imho)

Just had to share my little vent here regarding childcare.

We signed up to foster/adopt or adopt 0-6 years. We dismissed fostering completely because we both work and I didn't think that was really an option.

Our state was quite clear on this, baby sitters are up to the discretion of the foster parent. As a matter of fact the cw and sw continually remind us to go get a breath of fresh air with that statement.

Then again on the side Big Brothers and Sisters is very clear on the fact that I am not to leave my lil bro in a room alone with anyone who hasn't had a check.

Regardless it seems like they are putting you in a crappy situation.
