Update - Adopting with younger kids at home
First off, thanks for all of the helpful responses from everyone!! It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one.
![]() And I did receive an update from our last "No"s caseworker. She told me the reason why she turned us down is because the little boy is a biter. And his foster mom expressed concerns about him being around other children. ??? Ummm, Ok? My kiddos go to one of the better daycares in our area and we still have biters on occasion. I just thought that was kind of a lame excuse but oh well, she holds the case file. 09/18 - I'm so heartbroken, I've just received our 4th "no" in a week due to us having a 2yr old in our home. We're hoping for a moderate/severe special needs child between the ages of 0-6, any gender/race. But all we get is the same response - No. Why would our case worker help us do a homestudy specifically for children 0-6 if she knew that we'd never have a child placed with us? We are a very high energy family we have a 2yr, 4yr and 11yr at home. And we would never apply for a child that we knew was far more needy then we could handle. I just don't get it!! GRRRR!! There are hundreds of kids in the foster care system but we can't seem to qualify for any of them!! I know some of you have adopted children very close in age, how do you do it?? Are we not saying the right words??

Hang in there. Are you going through DFS? The only thing I can say for sure is that they are way more likely to put a child THEY classify as "moderate/severe" special needs in a home where they are the only child or the other are kids old enough to be sulf sufficient. There are lots of different ways a child could be special needs. Maybe they licensed you that way thinking it was appropraite for medical special needs but not behavior special needs? You might offer to do respite, so that you sort of demonstrate what you can handle.
Hang in there! It will happen for you! |
