Icwa

I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience with ICWA? (Indian Child Welfare Act) Feel free to respond here or PM me. I am interested to hear to what extent the Indian tribe or even other tribes were involved.

Heart

My son is Native American and we privately adopted him. ICWA did come in to play through 3 different tribes. Feel free to pm me with any specific questions.

ICWA applied to my oldest dd. However, she and my husband are the same tribe, so it was a non-issue. We just had to make sure the tribe was notified. Anytime you are dealing with ICWA, the tribe involved is going to have the final say, and each tribe has their own different standards. Some tribes will be very involved, others will not. Some tribes will agree to placement and adoption with non-Indian families, and others will not agree to adoption by any family outside that specific tribe.
