Heart MeeMaw

Hi! I am in a possible match with a 7 yr old who lives with a foster mom she calls Meemaw.

I am really hopeful that this will be my daughter!

My question for foster parents is:

Would you be comfortable becoming a sort of extended family to an adoptive placement?

The little girl in question is reportedly very bonded to the foster mom, and this has been her only placement for the four years she has been in care.

With such a large part of her life being spent with Meemaw....I feel uncertain about removing her from the first person who ever took care of her and kept her safe & happy.

Thanks!

Absolutely I would...but only after I had given them time to bond with their new family. Say 6 months or so.

Our recently AS views his first foster mom as an extra grandma now. It is wonderful that he has her! In the beginning we didn't see her for about two months after he came to stay with us, but then she came to his birthday party and he was fine with it. Wanted to show her his stuff and his siblings and hugged her bye when she left.

I would LOVE it!

BTW, I used to think six months was a good amount of time after placement, to settle in and bond, but now, after fostering/adopting for 10 years, I think a month is better. The child needs to know they weren't abandoned and that previous ff is ok.

Good luck with your new dd!

My daughter kept ties with her former foster parents. She talked more frequently in the beginning and less as time has went on.

I think it would be wonderful! I'm sure it's not ideal in every situation. But if it looks like it would work for you, I think it's great!

I think every situation is different but if it's a healthy supportive relationship, I think they would be honored to remain a family member. With adoption, we really redefine what family is. I've bene able to track down some of my daughter's bio-sibs and their adoptive families across the country. I regard them all as my family even though we're not technically related (I call the mom's my soul-sisters).
