Cousin in care. Help
My 13 month old cousin was removed from her family on friday. I just found out from my aunt today. I am wanting to get her but she is in the next county which is about 20 miles away. I called and talked to the woman who called my aunt and she said she could not place if not in the same county but that dont make since. I thought since she was family I could get her. Any suggestions. Thanks

Hire a lawyer in the county where your cousin is. Do it quickly. File for kinship placement. They can place without a home study, just a police record check. They don't like to, because the state money then goes to another county.

Not sure how your state is but here in Florida they would move her in a heartbeat to family if you are in the same state (we were told this when our niece went into care but in another state). You may have to get fingerprinted and cleared but you should be able to get your cousin quickly. I would work up the chain of command (supervisors) to find out why they are not moving her to your home. And find out what they require to move the child to your home and do it. If that doesn't get you anywhere get an attorney and that may make them move faster! Also, find out who the GAL is (if the child has one) and contact him/her. Be persistent and don't give up!

I agree with the others. They are absolutely not being straight with you. They absolutely should place her with you as opposed to an unrelated party. 20 minutes away from the county she is in is not even remotely an excuse. THe only people likely to have presedence over you are bio relatives of first degree. Father, grandparents, siblings. I think you might fall below them as a cousin.

We had same problem..we did hire our own lawyer because I did not trust what they were telling me...in the end they would not place our neice with us without a home study and the works, but I kept calling to make sure they were not forgeting me...it did take us two months, but we finally did get kinship placement. We even had birthmom wanting the baby placed with us, we were out of town on vacation when CPS took her from my neice..
I would call childs casa worker, they did help me a lot with information...or GAL whatever you have in your state. Keep going they HAVE to place with family, if there is family wanting the child, you may have to have home study though...but stay on them...

Our situation was almost the same as Yes2kids. We came forward for placement in the early part of the case. CPS pretty much dropped the ball on us (but our case was we were across country too) and until we got an attorney in the other state and filed a motion in court did it open their eyes. And all this after we actually became a licensed foster home here (because they required that).
You have to continue calling them. Don't give up. We even ended up calling the Governors office in our state and then in the other state. Since you are in the same state I would be calling everyone and anyone who could help me!

I was also told that they would place with us if we were in the same state.
I agree with the advice given above. FIGHT!

I just had to call the supervisor. The woman I spoke with that said they would not place was not a foster care worker she was just the one that called and left the message. She put me in touch with my cousins case worker and she took care of it right away.

Congratulations!I was going to say with the size of our counties here, 20 miles may have been closer than driving to the other side of their own. I'm glad to hear she is being placed with you.
