New placement

2 day old baby girl, D, came tonight. Mom tested + for marijuana, cocaine, and hallucinogens. Baby's urine was -, waiting on blood test, but she shows some withdrawal symptoms. She certainly doesn't like to be put down! (Yes, that's why i'm up so early, or should i say late lol).

DH is WONDERFUL! Absolutely perfect. He took the 11pm-3am shift so i could get some sleep. Only mistake was putting her diaper on her umbilical cord a little bit too high so it rubbed her and made her cry, but as soon as i opened the diaper she was fine. (A ploy to never have to change diapers? Hmmmm...) But seriously, he even left work for a couple of hours and did some shopping, picked out the cutest little bouncer and tub and (get this) he had lunch with a friend who has a 1 year old recently and remembered her saying she loved her Eddie Bauer travel system! Then he came home early too. He could not be more wonderful. Total 180 from our first placement. Yay!

How exciting. Does your SW think case is going to TPR?

For my husband's first diaper change, he gave her a murf that my friend discovered when she changer her an hour later. I was careful to criticize him b/c I didn't want to discourage him from trying again. He stepped up to the plate, but if I am in the room, he still expects me to change her.

I still think it's cute, though, that when he watches me change her, he tries to correct me. "You didn't check for murfs!" he'll say. I guess he doesn't get that if you line up the diaper correctly, you won't have to pull out a murf.

Oh, and D doesn't have a case worker yet (probably assigned later today), but apparently mom has had 2 other children test positive at birth (or she did) and enter care, and they both went to TPR/adoption. Not sure what if any bearing that has but perhaps it could. i'm hopeful, but i am certainly not counting on it and it's way too early to know much.

The placement worker said "i'm about 75% sure it'll go to adoption." He's said that before. So i don't believe anything he says lol. i like him, don't get me wrong, but when it comes to him saying "adoption" i just let it run out the other ear.

And of course who knows if dad's family would take her. i'm just presuming that he may not be the father of the other 2, and that since the other 2 went TPR/adoption to non-family that mom's family may not be interested. But you just never know.

I have no idea what a murf is either..I'm very happy to see he is doing better with this placement. Maybe he just needed a tiny one to get his feet wet on. Best wishes!

Murf is a wedgie...u know undies/diaper stuck in your butt! Get with it girls! LOL!

Congrats! And so glad about DH.

Swaddle her really snug. Newborns, especially drug exposed, need to feel very secure. Also a pacifier helps too in between feedings.

Thanks. She definitely loves the hospital paci but not the store-bought one. i've tried swaddling her as tightly as i can but she still won't let me put her down. i'm going to wear her for a few days and hope that helps, and maybe get a sleep positioner tonight so she'll feel more snuggly... i hope.

Anything else i should know about withdrawals.

If she has siblings that have been TPR'd & adopted I'd ask the sw if those families have been contacted about her placement. My son's 1/2 brother was offered to me at 18 months old & I wouldn't take him from the only home he knew but I could have. (& I think it would have been wrong - even though I wish I was offered him at birth)

Fredalina COngrats! Also for questions about withdrawl
(if you haven't already) you may want to post a question in the drug exposed section of this site under special needs. I have read really helpful stuff over there related to newborns and drug exposure/withdrawl.

Congrats...I know your are doing great with her. There is nothing like holding a newborn infant close...Good luck and glad to here DH is doing so good, it really helps when they are on board.

You said not a store bought pacy, what are you using? Our new fs seems to like the smoothie...back when my son was a premie you could not buy those and that is what the hospital had given him..

COngrats! Glad DH is doing better this time. You might try putting her blanket in the dryer to warm it up a bit and then laying her in that like a nest when you put her down. I used to do that to trick my son into thinking I was still holding him. Just take the extra blankets away after a few minutes to reduce the suffocation hazard.
