At Last
D’s mom signed the surrender papers today!!! We have been waiting for almost 10 months for this day to come.
Like all this hasn’t been stressing me out enough, it was drama to the last minute! We were all supposed to report to court at 9am. The mom didn’t show until 10! We were all sitting there, thinking she wasn’t going to show. The ongoing sw was checking her notes, getting ready for a trial. I was approached by the DCF lawyer, and D’s lawyer, asking me if I wanted them to get the judge to close the adoption, during the trial. The adoption worker was talking to me about how trials are almost always appealed. My head was spinning!!! By 10:30, we found out that the judge was not even in the courthouse yet! He had a doctor’s appointment this morning. So rather than letting everyone know that they could show up late, everyone had to be there on time, and wait for him. The hallway was quite crowded. Since we were waiting for the judge, the lawyers decided to get going on the signing of the papers. So they grabbed a notary, and brought us into a conference room. We were finally called into court, just before noon. I had a tear in my eye, as the birth mom was under oath and talking to the judge about how she understood what it meant to be giving up her rights. It just felt like we have finally reached the home stretch. The best part was after she sat down, the judge thanked her for coming and making the right decision of D. Then he looked over at me, gave me a big smile (doesn’t look like the kind of person who smiles) and said “We know she is in a good place”. When it was all over, the CPS lawyer and the social workers congratulated me, and asked how it feels now. I said it hasn’t sunken in yet. It actually still hasn’t!!! So now DCF just has to tie up all the paperwork, and we will get our adoption date!!!! ![]()
