Unhappy infant tested positive for Meth & Escasty (sp)

I have a 6 month old that was just placed last week. He had a drug test ran on Wed. then on Friday I had to take him in to have his head shaved for a hair sample (had very little hair). Today the SW called and told me his Meth level was 1100 and that he also tested positive for escatsy (sp?). I knew he was having withdrawals the 1st day because he had the tremors in his little hand, arms and legs. His right foot draws and the toes fold under. He cry's and can't be comforted. I must say that at times he smiles and loves to be cuddled. He has also started having these spells less often and also they do not last as long as before. But I am doing baby massage on him several times a day. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know that no level is good but all the worker could say was this 1100 was very high. Anyone ever care for a child with levels this high? If so what was your experience? The worker said he would probably never go home. I am trying to find any info on this.

1100 is high especially for a child that is not a newborn. Meaning he had to have been consuming the drug not just absorbing it through his skin. Was mom B-feeding that could be a source as well.

I have cared for two with "high" levels however they were both newborns. One was my ad she was 3500 at birth and we had another punkin for a six weeks last year. Hers were 11,ooo+ at birth.

I would talk to your Ped about things to watch for. Keep stimulation low. Not to many things at the same time going. He might need to be held a lot and also if you can swaddle him it could help him feel like his body is undercontrol and that would help calm his nervous system. Our little one with 11ooo had to be on anti seizure meds. I don't thing you will have to go that far but I would definitley call the Dr and discuss what things should be watched for.

Sounds like the Bios have been cooking up drugs round the clock since this poor little guy was born

This is just a guess...but I would say with levels in the 1100 range that his bottles were sitting out in the open while the drugs were being cooked, so he was ingesting drugs with every bottle, plus what he would absorb through the skin from the particles in the air and off of clothing.

How sad...I would say ditto to what PP said...swadling/bundling may be helpful as well as wearing baby. I know skin to skin contact can help as well. Sounds like you are off to a good start with him!

Thanks for the replies

I do feel so bad for this little man. He also has a very big head so there may be some FAE also. Anyways thanks for the advice/info as this is my 1st drug exposed infant. He cried from 4:15am until 6:20 this morning all I could do was cuddle him in a dark room and hum to him. He is exhausted, hopefully when he wakes up he will feel better.
