A's sick - any guesses?

he's had what he thought was flu for over two weeks - lots of coughing, fever etc. He finally went to a doctor and they called for a blood test. He wasn't sure WHAT they are checking for....I'm thinking maybe mono? I feel bad, because last week sometime he texted my daughter to say "Is your mom up? I want her to take me to the hospital." But I was sleeping so she just said "No she's not. It's only 5 blocks - you can walk!"

I would check to see if his glands are swollen but anytime something drags on that long it is a good thing to have a DR check.

Yep, they are - but he gets that quite often when he's got any kind of fever. He gets tonsilitis sometimes, but his throat is only sore off and on - not consistently so it doesn't sound like strep to me. Darn, I wish I'd gone with him so I knew what the doctor actually said!

I work in the health field and I know that we have had a serious amount of people in sick!!! The symptoms are fever, body aches, cough, sore throat - and for the most part it is just viral! Which does suck because they do not put you on an antibiotic for a virus - you just need to work through it. There is strep going around - so I would check that out

Hope this might help

My last serious bout of strep did NOT give me a sore throat. My neck was swollen and sore, but no sore throat.

A boy (teenager, actually) from my Church just got out of the hospital. He had meningitis. I'm not sure which - but the least serious kind. His main symptom was dehydration. He was dehydrated, feverish and achy.

Good luck finding out what's wrong.

Where I live a really horrible cold is going around. I had a high fever (104) that lasted quite a while, with sore throat, exhaustion, and body aches. The whole thing lasted about 2 and a half weeks. I have never known colds to be that bad but that is all it was and since then almost everyone I know has had the same thing.

Yes, we had that virus too! In the beginning, D’s temp was spiking, so I took her to the ER. It was 105.3 by the time we got there! I was horrified that they then made me wait 45 minutes for a bed with a 13 month old that sick! All we could do for it was motrin and wait it out.

I'm just not sure what conditions they can diagnose with a blood test, which is why I was thinking mono. I don't know if they use blood for meningitis, but there HAS been some of that around here. I'm thinking if it was just strep they'd use a throat swab. We thought he just had a really bad flu!

If he had meningitis, he'd have an incredibly stiff neck---so stiff, he could hardly bend it.

(Been there, done that, got the IV for six days...)

Ugh I have 3 sons and a husband down with this "flu" - high fever, body aches and extreme lethargy. Noone is moving off the couch for 3 days.

Is it bad of me to be kind of enjoyihng the break?? No fights, no mess, no running around -- just sleepy kids who want juice. THIS is easy.

Bronchitis

I had the coughing thing for 10 days. Went to doctor and was told I have brochitis. It's hit my mom really bad for over two weeks- she has scarringin her lungs but not pneumonia. This thing has really knocked all of us. I just want all of us to be healthy! It's depressing. . . . .

Whooping Cough would be something for which I'd test. His childhood vaccines will have worn off, he probably hasn't had a DTAP which has a whooping cough booster (the P is for Pertussis, the medical name of Whooping Cough), and despite the immunizations, it is on the rise and becoming quite common. It often doesn't have the distinctive whoop for air after the cough in adults. I'd keep him away from all infants, young children, elderly, and those with compromised immune systems or breathing difficulties right now just in case.

I know how you feel. My 6 yr old was sick the whole week of Feb. school vacation which meant that she was not arguing and fighting with anyone else...just sleeping and drinking.

They haven't called with the results yet, but he's still unwell. This will be his third week of missed school. I don't know if he's really too sick to go or if he's "milking" it a bit, but it's bad enough his social worker actually called him in sick (he's NEVER done that before).
