daycare and fostering
I am currently mom to 4 kids ages 4 and under. I will probably be getting the big brother of one sibling group that I have.He is 2 months younger then my oldest
I need to get a job. I am thinking about doing daycare. so my question to all of you experienced moms out there... do you think I will burn out being a single parent to 5 young children and caring for additional kids? My family and friends think I am NUTS but hey thats what they said when I started fostering!!

You should check what your licensing will be. Here you can watch 8 kids including your own. If two of those are under 2 you can have 6 under 5. If you have 3 under 2 you can have 5 under 5. The rest have to be 5 or over.
If you already have that many little ones I can't imagine what difference a couple more will make. |

I am in Colorado and just asked my agency about this, since I was even wondering how people had jobs and managed to do foster care. So, I thought having a home daycare would be perfect since I have been a nanny for 15 years. My agency told me that I can take care of kids out of my home and do foster care but they do not do duel licensing, although it is legal to be licensed for both
I have yet to get a real answer for the duel licensing thing, but I DO know that I have to abide by state regulations for childcare ratios; 7 kids maximum, only 2 can be under 2 (my daughter is 19 months...so...) But I think it's a perfect way to be available to foster kids but have an income coming in as well. I can't wait to hear more about this, and if you go forward with it. I don't think you're crazy at all! You have obviously proven that you are basically super human with all that you have taken care of so far! Also, in my experience, once you have over 4 kids and add in a few more, it really doesn't make a considerable change. Chaos is chaos, and we thrive on it, right?! ![]() Last edited by Tinytoes : 02-19-2009 at 07:22 PM. |

I have dual license for foster and daycare. I have 5 kids, 3 fosters and 8 daycare children. We can have 12 kids. 10 under 5yrs. 3 of those can be under the age of 2. Our county agency is pretty good about giving variances for those providers that are proven capable.
Some days are tough. When one child is out of sorts it sometimes rubs off on the others. And then you still get to deal with the grumpy's after all the daycare children go home. I will probably be quitting this June because I will have too many children once school is out. I could hire someone but I am not certain I want to do that. I never thought that I would have 6 new children in 6 months. I have had to reconfigure some things.

Definitely check with your agency. And read your state rules...in Arizona they don't allow you to run a daycare out of your home and foster. At least in Arizona it falls under the statute that states:
"An applicant or foster parent shall not: a. Conduct home business activities which prevent the applicant or foster parent from caring for a foster child in accordance with foster care requirements" |

I have already confirmed that I am allowed to do childcare. Never actually asked about becoming a licensed daycare.

I did start becoming burnt out with all the children and I am married so at least got some breaks! I switched to watching only teachers' children and has helped big time! My 'work day' is done at 4:30 and am off when my children are off school so get a 'break'. I do think that having a daycare is nice because with the majority of the children around the same age, they really do entertain each other during their 'free time' and have lots of fun together.

I had been a licensed daycare provider for over 15 yrs when I began to do fostering. I needed a separate license for each. In Massachusetts you have to be licensed to run a daycare out of your home or you get BIG fines. In MA. you can only have 6 children (this would include any bio, foster and daycare children) at a time and only 2 of those can be under 2 yrs old. They did allow more if you had children coming in after school and would only be there for a couple of hours.
I wasn't allowed to use my upstairs or my basement for daycare because there weren't 2 exits from those locations but my downstairs was plenty big enough. Doing daycare is the best job to have if you need to work but still be home with your kids. I highly recommend it. Good luck ![]()

we are UNlicensed and can have 3 apeice here in PA, so dh and i can have up to six, plus our own kids. it works out really well for us. i totally agree that once you get so many it dosent even phase you, as long as you are a little organized and consistent with routine!

I'm in Oregon and although technically you can do both, they frown on it and really want you to do one or the other. There are other ways to make money. If you make crafts, you can sell them online. Or you can go to yard sales and try to sell you finds on eBay. Good luck!
