Fost-Adopt story/picture books?
There are a lot of really cute books out there for adopted children and families. "Did my first mother love me?" by Kathryn Ann Miller, "I love you like crazy Cakes" by Rose Lewis, "Over the moon" by Karen Katz are all great stories but they are very much appropriate for infant and international adoptions, not so much our situation....Does anyone know of any?
Does anyone know of any good books that 8,6, and 4 year olds cam relate too? I mean kids from foster care adoptions dont tend to have a "Your birth mommy loved you SOOOO much that she wanted the very best for you. So, she decided to let you come live with people who can love you and take care of you..." You know??? I think I'm going to look for a picture book story of Anne of Green Gables, maybe...I found a book called "Zachary's new home: A story for foster and adopted children" by Geraldine and Paul Blomquist, has anyone read it? I found it at adoptionbooks.com, if you want to look at it to jog any memories or if youa re interested...Humm...other book ideas? |

There is a book that I happened upon at our local library called, A Forever Family that I thought was really good. It is one little girl's story (nonfiction) of being adopted through foster care. It has pictures of her family, the foster family that cared for her before she was adopted (who she says she still visits), and the social worker who matched her with her adoptive parents. It also shows her with her extended adoptive family and playing with her best friend. There is one poignant part showing a picture of her infant cousin and the little girl says that she is sad that no one can tell her what she was like when she was a baby and she wonders why her mother couldn't take care of her. The book positive overall without making things too simple, you know?
You might also check out the Pact website (Welcome to Pact, An Adoption Alliance) because they have a section that reviews and recommends books about adoption broken down by age. I've found their reviews really helpful. |
