Question Stimulus Question

If you were able to claim your fc on your 2007 taxes, were your fc included in your stimulus check also? We had our taxes done the other day and we are claiming our fc this year. The tax preparer said that we would be gettng a stimulus check for them because they were not included in the one we received last year. We did not claim them in 2007.

Any experience with this?

You only get stimulus in regards to the children you claimed on your taxes for the year the stimulus was (plus of course the amt for you and your spouse). We got the stimulus check last year and we claimed our foster child on our taxes for 2007 (plus our bio daughter) so we got credit for 2 children and our stimulus was based on the exemptions for our 2007 taxes. We received 1800 (1200 for married filing jointly and then 300 extra for each child).

we were told in our PS-MAPP training that we could not claim foster children on our taxes. Is it different for each state?

NO, this is the IRS which is federal. Foster children ARE an exemption for you but you'll need their SSN to file. They gave you incorrect information.

I believe that you can claim them if you had them for 6 months and 1 day or more out of that year.

You also do not use the reimbursement as part of your income when filing taxes.

The stimlus check was based of your 2007 exemptions, but if you had a child in 2008 for more than 6 months, and you are claiming them this year, then you'll get tht $300 for that child too. Our son was born in 2008, so he wasn't listed on our 2007 taxes, but when I walked through filing for our 2008 taxes, it gives us the extra $300.

However it goes by how much you got for th stimulus, so if for example you claimed a different FC in 2007, and the child you are claiming now is not in addition to that child, I don't think you would get another $300.

Hope that makes sense.

I didn't claim my girls on my taxes last year, but because I claimed them this year and they lived with me in 07 I was told also I'd get the stimulus for them, I got my taxes back on friday and the extra 600 was included.

We included our foster children on our 2007 taxes and received the stimulus check for them. We'll also be claiming them this year since we had one of them until October and the other until November.

I'm still fighting with the agency over the child we had until November. He worked a part-time job and they keep telling me they won't get his tax statement for me so I can get him filed because his earnings are confidential and only his information . I told them if he is due a refund (unlikely) that I'll get him that but if he owes taxes (very likely) that I'll pay it for him. I finally gave up sending the tax codes to the worker and supervisor.

I talked to the Director over the local agency and gave her all the IRS codes that outlines he's a qualifying child, he can't claim himself because I can claim him (even if I chose not to claim him he can't claim himself) and that if I don't file his earnings and he OWES but doesn't pay it then the tax liability is the parent's (or person who could claim him) responsibility... and with the way the IRS moves it will be 5yrs when they catch the error... could you imagine the taxes, penalities, and interest by then!

I'm told I should be getting his tax statement soon.

We just came back from doing our taxes and were told we were getting stimulus for 2 more children. We filed last year with just my son. This year we filed with 3 foster kids. She said that the stimulus was based on this years tax filing but it was giving to us in advance. They just based it on what we had filed the year before and were amending it when they saw what we actually did file this year. So we are filing this year on 3 kids you take out the one child from last year (my son) and that leaves 2 more kids. So extra $600 is being added to our return. Woo Hoo!!!

I wonder what they're going to do for people who they gave too much stimulus money to. Like the fc birthparents. They were probably given stimulus checks for those children last year even though they didn't have the kids.
