Anyone with Shaken Baby Syndrome experience?

Has anyone had experience with shaken baby syndrome? I have the opportunity to adopt three foster kids. The youngest is 16 months old, they have been in the system for 1 year now. He has shaken baby syndrome. He had a stint put in his head to drain the fluid from his brain and he was wearing a helmet, but I am told that it is off now and his head shape is looking good. He is crawling and pulling up on things, but not walking. I don't know much more right now. Has anyone had a SBS baby that turned out to be ok?

You might want to pm Lylac. She's incredibly experienced and has several kids with SBS. I see you have posted over at the special needs forum. Lots of great people over there can give you all kinds of support!

One of my friends in the foster system adopted a little boy who has SBS. His right arm doesn't work really and he has some learning diabilities, but other than that he does really well. He is in integrated classroom (not strictly special ed) and walks, runs, talks, plays, and has the best little personality!

I think it all depends on the severity. I hope others with more experience can tell you all about it. I just wanted you to know sometimes they are ok!

I have no experiece with SBS but it sounds like he is not too far behind. My premature FS just started walking at around 16 months. You might ask some more specific questions about his developement (speech, cognitive, etc.). Has there been a developmental assessment done and what were the results? Good luck to you!

Carly
