Medicaid Question (X Posted)

We are hoping to start the process to adopt our FD here very shortly. (TPR was last week.) I have heard conflicting information about this, but when a child is adopted from FC do they continue to receive their medicaid? DH and I were discussing putting her on our health insurance, but then another foster parent told me she thought that she would still receive medicaid. We live in Kansas if that makes any difference.

Medicaid

If the child is on medicaid before coming into care, they still get it. Now, my 2 adopted sons are on my insurance and Medicaid is secondary. medicaid also does not pay for everything (which I thought they did).

in AL it is case by case. if they child qualifies for the subsidy it is almost always yes to medicaid.

My son got medicaid until he was 18 as a part of his adoption subsidy. It's standard for all adoptions from foster care here.

A FC continuing medicaid after adoption is entirely up to the laws/rules of your state. It is NOT a given, so don't assume you will receive it.

In Texas an adopted child is eligible for medicaid after adoption if they are special needs only. In addition, the adopted parent has to negotiate the special needs subsidy, which also includes medicaid. The qualifications for a special needs child in Texas are:

1) Any child over the age of six
2) Any minority Child over the age of two
3) Any sibling group
4) Child with documented medical needs

So, in Texas if you are adopting a single anglo child who is younger than six years old you DO NOT get any adoption assistance - including medicaid. In addition, if you are adopting a single child of any race under 2 years old you DO NOT get adoption assistance.

I'd suggest you know the rules of your state.

Here is a link to the North American Council on Adoptable Children - the State Subsidy page which lists each state and what they offer and what the requirements are
