Medic Alert

Have any of you asked your fc's cw if a Medic Alert bracelet could be purchased for the child if they have a serious medical condition?

I've got a little one with a serious medical issue and want to ask the cw about getting a Medic Alert bracelet. I have gotten one (I paid for it) for my fc whom I am adopting.

It just seems to me that it would be in the childs best interest to have the Medic Alert bracelet if they have a serious issue (heart problem, seizures, asthma, etc).

What do you all think?

I say yes, ask for one, the worst they can do is say no.

I had a little one come over to my house a while back (a neighbor kid) and just before I gave everyone a snack I noticed she had a bracelet and asked to see it. Turns out the child was anaphelactic(sp?) to nuts, eggs and dairy...Ummm...can you imagine?!!? I was a little annoyed with the parents for not letting me know this---what if i had not seen the bracelet???BUT the bracelet was there and I did see it and it made a big difference. The truth is, any one of us can forget to let everyone who cares for the child know everything some of the time. And we can not be with the kids 100% of the time. Good to give whoever responds to an emergency a heads up about what might be happening. Just be careful not to let it be the ONLY way people know about the kids condition.

For older kids who have cell phones. This info can be programed to their ICE (In Case of Emergency info) most have it, as well as a bracelet. In my case dd is almost 13 I have caught her without her bracelet...but never her phone

BTW I use a private agency the have never turned down a request my experience with the state agency is well different.

It may be easier and faster to go through the child's ped or specialist and have it paid with insurance. Getting reimbursement always seem to be a pain, even when the item was preapproved.

A Med Alert bracelet or necklace should be worn by anyone who has a condition which should be IMMEDIATELY known by an EMT if there was ever an emergency.

You do not have to go through a doctor if you don't want to. Most pharmacies have order brochures. Personally, I use American Medical (website below) for my ID needs. I like their selection. I've had good service and their prices are reasonable.

American Medical ID - Medical ID Alert, Custom Engraved Medical Bracelets and Necklaces. Identify Yourself!

I have three bracelets currently so I can rotate styles. I make sure I never leave the house without one. I have a trifecta of Asthma, Latex Allergy and Neutropenia which need to be known. Anymore and I'll have to leave my name off my ID.

Hi. My kid has hyperglycemia & on insulin. There is a social worker at the endocrinologist and she says all kids coming through their office get one id band free if she turns in the order form. So check with the doctors office first where they get their care.
