Our age range was 7-10 and I didn't want anything that my child would outgrow too quickly. we made the decision to keep the walls white since we were adopting, and let kiddo choose his own color. As for sheets and blankets I went with neutral colors: sage green, red and yellow plaid, blue sheets with yellow stars. Things that would work either way. I had a few gender-netutral toys also (legos, coloring books, games like operation and candyland, some books, stuffed animals.)

I really wanted our kids to have "magical" rooms. We have a boy room and a girl room. They were surprisingly inexpensive. All it took was a little paint and a lot of creativity.
Here are pictures: Boy Room http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Nov08092-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...T/Nov08095.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...T/Nov08093.jpg Girl Room (these were taken before the room was 100% done - I'll try to post finished pictures later) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...GreenT/bed.jpg dresser.jpg - Image - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1.../otherwall.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...notherview.jpg

Dollar tree has "wallie" type things for girls, boys, and babies.
We also have a couple small quilts. We hang boy or girl one on wall when needed to add personal touch for each child. Plus, you can get a bed quilt at Ross for quite cheap. For a toddler bed, Quilt can be cut and sewn for enough bedding for 3-4 beds. It's great with how much our bedding was getting soiled around here. I always had extra.

Here, the foster room is painted in a light mint green color and I swap posters around depending on the gender/age of the child(ren). I also use the wall clings sometimes too, most of the clings will stick to their dressers too. Another thing I sometimes do is have a set of boy style curtains and a girl style curtains as there are two windows in the room so they get noticed right away (right now it has a 3 and 5 yr old boys in it so it is CARS curtains).

so creative
All of the little kiddos rooms sound adorable. You all must be super creative. I love the pics that people had. I'll have to put up a picture as soon as I find that little white cord that attaches my camera and computer. I know I saw it somewhere-oops.

Those sound so cute.
I am on a budget and this is where I am so far. I have just one room, I have a crib, toddler bed and daybed in one room. Because I have only one room available and I do not know that gender child I am getting, I tried to decorate the room to make it welcoming to both girls and boys. I wanted a bright Happy room. I left the walls antique white. I brought some Bright yellow/marigold Sheer curtains. My friend gave me some Crib sets complete with sheets, and comforter with the dust ruffles. One is yellow, with white, blue, and purples bears. I purchased a yellow pillow sham. I have that one on the toddler bed The daybed has a light blue comforter with Marigold trim. The bed has a yellow dust ruffle. The crib has a yellow and blue blanket. I really wanted to put the yellow bumper that matches the set that is on the toddler bed, but I can't. Here in TX you can not put bumpers in cribs. On the walls, I have two matching crib comforters that have bear children playing in the garden. The primary colors are yellow. I had a white slim Wicker shelf. I colored it Marigold yellow. It matches the curtains perfectly. I have books and a few toys stragically placed on the shelves already. I am so glad that you mentioned the Dollar Tree and Wallies. Thanks for the tips ladies.

And a heck of a lot of talent. No way I could paint those. Adorable rooms by the way. I want the ladybug room for myself.

Don't forget Goodwill and Salvation Army, etc. I found like new boutique style crib set today. 1.75 for each piece. So the whole set for about 6 bucks! So excited.

We have 4 and under, so not a whole lot to worry about with decor.
DD's old nursery is the room we use for 2 of our kids. We left it light green with a garden mural. There are bees and snails, butterflies and dragonflies all fluttering around. The beds all have blue sheets and one has a white bed skirt and the other is lavendar. If the kids were sticking aorund we might change it, but I've also considered adding a pond to the mural with some frogs hopping over our little guys bed. The other room is one that the oldest shares with DD - it is purple with fairies and a fairy castle on the wall. Polka dot curtains with ribbon tabs and lavendar sheets with white matalese bedding.

I have one room painted light yellow, one room is pale green. Both very gender nuetral that can be switched at any time.
The third is dark blue. The third room was never intended as a bedroom but as a playroom. When it was turned into a bedroom for JT (so she wouldn't have to share with 5yr olds). I went out and got dry erase paint. We covered one full wall with it. Now she is able to draw, get her feelings out and then erase them and she uses it to study. The problem with that is now everyone wants a dry erase wall in there room. I will be spending one weekend soon completeing that. I know how wonderful it has been though as an outlet for feelings and emotions so I will schedule it in.

Thank you so much
You've made my morning. The rooms weren't that hard to paint, honestly. I just sketched it on the wall and then filled it in. The lady bugs bodies were made by me tracing different size plates on the wall. The paint was quite cheap, I picked most of it up at Home Depot on the "Ooops" rack for less than $8 a gallon. I figured that it would be that hard or that expensive to paint over it if it came out crapy. I think the total spent in each room, with linens was under $150. That doesn't include the cribs or beds.I wanted them to be whimsical and I think we achieved that. The kids have loved their rooms.

All those rooms sound neat. My husband and I are just finishing up with getting our license. Should be in the system within the next 2 weeks hopefully.
We have 5 children 1 girl and then 4 boys. So our prefence for a fc is a girl 0-5. So we went all out and did the room in light pink, with a pink dresser, toddler bed, and pink curtains with pink, white, and red circles. with wallie circles on the wall. We arent done all the way yet. But here is a picture for eveyone to see http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/b...nkbedroom2.jpg http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/b...nkbedroom1.jpg Tonia |
