Rinse (no shampoo) with warm water, add conditioner, rinse
Add oil to hair and scalp, add leave-in conditioner to ends Part in fourths Hold firmly; detangle from ends upward Braid or twist all the way to the ends Use covered rubber bands only Beg, plead & bribe to get them to wear bonnets or scarves all night I would make this my weekly.... then wash with shampoo every other week... and if you are good with braids they can stay in 2 weeks at a time!! Beleive me you DO NOT want to braid and comb every day!!!!!! My girls LOVE thier braids but would NEVER sit daily to have them done. I do comb it every other day when I have it in puffs!

No need to rinse with water daily and use a conditioner that you rinse out. Use a leave-in conditioner when you comb out the hair and a conditioner that you rinse only when you wash it. Braids should last several days and will keep the hair from tangling. (Puffs don't.) I comb out and condition my son's hair daily because it isn't braided so it will tangle. It's actually long enough to cornrow, but he just seems too young for that style. You may run in to the same thing with a boy if your county has rules about cutting a foster child's hair - as the county my son is from does. |

Oh, thank goodness! i was very much not looking forward to doing this ritual every morning when i will already have to get up super early anyway! Whether i can get good enough at braiding to have this work for 2 weeks or even half a week is the question... Some of what i've read says that i may have to care for the hair in sections, over time (possibly weeks or even months), depending on how well it was cared for previously. So, uh, naive question, but what do i do with the rest of it in the meantime? Leave the tangles in and braid it anyway? That can't feel good or be healthy... |

my oldest and first AA fdaughter's previous fmom (AA) told me... you can't comb her hair she just gets upset, just pull it back in a puff on the top of her head. So I didnt comb it and believe me it looked NASTY, until I took her to a hair stylist. They ripped me off but it gave me the push I needed to figure out how to do it myself!!
When I first combed her hair, it would take me atleast 45 mins JUST TO COMB it out!!! Now I can comb and braid in 45 mins!!! She has beautiful hair and after combing it out every other day for the first 2 weeks, I started doing braids. It is time consuming to comb out it all out at first couple times, but with my girls it didnt take long for their hair to get really nice!

You now have a list I wish I would have had before I got the girls. I would also add Just For Me Detangler or similar detangler. My girls's hair is very curly and we use that like it is going out of style.

Isn't it interesting that, in the white community, having oily shiny hair is a sign that you aren't caring for it enough, but in the AA community it's the opposite? i have very dry, coarse hair (i always assumed it was a feature of my small amount of AA heritage), but i could never go a week without shampooing because my hair is light brown and shows oil like there's no tomorrow and looks awful. i should have been a hippy in the 60's lol.
On weekends i don't shampoo at all, and usually put a natural lotion in overnight once a week to get back some of the shine, not to mention heavy-duty conditioners and other moisturizing products. My husband makes me wear a hat lol. OK, not really, but it still looks bad! |
